I have never felt heat like this here.....  In New Zealand, we generally have much colder temperatures. It is considered a really hot day if we make it to 30'C, but this is just.....insane.....  Just hiding inside with all the doors and windows CLOSED and the A/C on. Funny how on a hot day, people will open up all their house windows. All that does is let the heat IN, so it is not doing you any favours really if you are trying to stay cool. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

Yeah, its pretty warm in Wellington too, with hardly any of the normal Welly wind that keeps it nice and cool. |

Yeah I've seen that here a couple of times, inside the shed it gets to 50c even with the roller doors open. If its a dry heat, I find its still ok to be in the shed provided you drink lots of water and dont exert yourself, and have a fan or two blowing air where you're working. You're a bit smelly at the end of the day though. But sometimes I just spend the day in the air-con office, and will even have a sleep on the office floor next to the dog when I get bored. Nasty! I remember on the news last week they said the western suburbs of Sydney were officially the hottest place on earth! Mind you, in 6 months I know I'll be complaining about the cold! The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

News tonight said that Dunedin Airport was 33'C, which is the hottest it has been on-record since about 1920!  Different areas of the same city will record different temperatures, which is why I was recording 43'C in Mosgiel. The thermometer was in the sun(and no wind) when I took that photo, but I wanted some evidence, as people won't believe it! Mosgiel is usually about 10'C hotter then the News says, cos the 'Official' temperature is taken at the airport, which is in the middle of a huge open plain, so any wind will move the heat away and keep it a little cooler. Mosgiel is surrounded on three sides by hills which probably helps to shield us from the wind a little. It would have easily been 35'C or so in the shade. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

Have had 46 twice here in the last 3 weeks, Probably 5-6 days in the 40s and one week the day temp never got below 35. Humidity there for a while was insane as well. Wish we could get some decent rain though. Been boring some post holes 70 Cm down and all that's coming up is dust. Was telling a mate yesterday, he laughed. He said he was doing holes last week 2.5M down and the shale was coming up bone dry. Had to wet the dirt to get it to sit in the auger so he could pull it out the hole. I'm sure some would say it's all to do with Glo Bull warming. Not the relos whom just got back from holidays in the northern hemisphere where they got snowed in at airports, couldn't leave their hotels and were snowed in everywhere they went. Decided to go to florida where it would be warmer. They were publishing warnings everywhere to leave your taps dripping because they were worried about all the pipes splitting and freezing in the unprecedented cold. |

I have just come up with a brilliantly cunning plan for shed ventilation.... Found a shattered 300W solar panel behind a solar installers factory unit. Brought it home, threw it up on shed roof. Output goes down to some twin Radiator fans I wired in series I sat in the shed window. Get the tabs in the grove of the window, slide it tight on the shroud, locked in place. Sun shines and those fans blow a gale. No hotter in the shed than out but if you are standing on the other side of the shed (9.5x9.5m) you get a great breeze that's very cool. If you are closer... heaven! It's Nano all computer controlled. When it's a bit cloudy and not so hot, fans back off. Automatically stop and night. Hotter it gets, the harder they blow. Little computer is so small, you can't even see it. Just looks like 2 wires coming from the panel to the fans! :0) Panel, Free, Radiator Fans, Free, Running cost, FREE. Satisfaction factor, 1000% Now to find another broken panel to do the same in the other side window! Wife says Bugger that, I'll paint the fans to make them fit in with the decor and you can put them on the back verandah for a nice breeze when we sit out there. |

As I write this it is 8°F (-13°C) here. We're having a heat wave. A few days ago it was -14°F (-25°C). Yikes! 46°C (115°F)!!! That's like Death Valley! I would never hang around any place with those kind of temperatures. In the summer here I head indoors when it gets above 80°F (+26°C). Paul in NY |

That's exactly what I say when I hear or see places with snow feet deep and and all the problems that brings. Always wonder to myself " Who would live in a frozen hell hole like that and why would you not move somewhere with a decent climate??" :0) Thing is, when it's hot here I DO head indoors to the AC. Just my definition of hot is at least 10o higher than yours. |

Yep, all a matter of what you are used to. In November wife and I went to cairns for 10 days for our 25th wedding anniversary. Yes, it was hot and humid as everyone warned but we were walking round kinda wondering when it was going to get bad. We didn't think all that much of it. When we got home, the dry heat really knocked me for a few days and I could really feel the difference. The tropics were a soft heat and the heat here was like a blowtorch searing at you. yep, terrible, awful place up there in the tropics. Can't wait to get back next year. Loved it. Already booked the best hotel in the place as we want to do it in style this year. |

It's funny, I'm the opposite- I can handle a dry heat no worries, even up into the fourties But put a bit of moisture in it like on the coast, and I'm looking for aircon even in the low thirties I been in snow twice in my life, the second time I went skying with a bunch of mates when we decided to go down to threadbo for the long weekend... About an hour into the first day, said stuff this and wisely spent the next three days in front of the beautiful blazing fireplace they had there, bar close at hand- THATS the way to treat snow IMHO |

@palcal There is some very pretty country and coastline up your way. I have travelled a lot (for work and pleasure) all over Oz and Abroad and I think the only thing I find tough is high temp with very high humidity like Taiwan/Singapore can get also Dubai heat can be quite draining. Snowed-in or hot otherwise all good. |

My mate was saying this the other week when I was complaining of the humidity here. I went out and worked for about 90 min and my T shirt was like someone had thrown a bucket of water over me. My fashionista daughter was disgusted and made me change my shirt when I came in. She then spotted my cotton work pants I was wearing were also soaked tot eh bottom of the pockets. Was telling mate that night and he laughed. He said when he was in asia he couldn't figure out why he couldn't get dry getting out the shower. Kept wiping himself and still wasn't dry till he figured out it as sweat not water. He said you don't know what Humidity is till you go to Singapore or those Asian countries. My cousin has lived in Dubai for years. Her husband is in a " Honoured" position and she gets a servant come Chauffeur/ bodyguard/ guy with a credit card that pays for everything she wants or anywhere she goes. She wants us to come visit for a holiday but I'm not keen. I'd probably make some wise crack or swear and get locked up or something. |
