Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I don't know if this is me or not but when downloading from Geoff's site the files are now WinZip. I don't have WinZip and they want $43 to buy it. Even old files I downloaded ages ago now have the WinZip logo on the folder and I cant open them.
I think it was WinRAR before. ???
Paul.

edit. On my Win XP machine I have no problem, when I open the Zip folder the files are already unzipped.Edited by palcal 2018-01-27

Sounds like something has installed itself on your PC. If WinXP can open them, they are plain old zip files, so Win10 should have no problems.

Maybe a file association has gone bad. Silly question, do you have WinZip installed? Are you sure? Maybe a free version?

Sure sounds like the file association for .zip file has been changed to point to WinZip.

Try right-clicking the zip file and select "Open With" / "Choose another app" from the pop-up menu. Then select the WinRAR program (or whatever program you used to use to open Zip files on your Win 10 PC), and be sure to check the "Always use this app to open .zip files" checkbox. This should restore the .zip file association back to the program you used to use.

Oh....
How disappointing.

I was hoping to be able to rant a little more about Win10.

Just kidding.

Had this same annoyance the other day.

New Tecra I bought back in June that I have barely used.

Went to open a Zip file & I get WinZip needs licensing....

It comes preinstalled on Toshibas, with a trial period that had expired, and it disables Win10's inbuild "Compressed Folders" that can handle Zips anyway.

Simple solution, just uninstall WinZip & let the internal stuff come back into association.

Other alternative that I use & performs rather well is 7zip, it handles a whole stack of other file types & is totally free.

Cheers

Don't bait me, boy.

On WinZip, I have never used it in years. ALL my zipping and unzipping is done in 7Zip that you linked to. I dearsay most others also use 7Zip these days.

It can zip and unzip .ZIP files, so it is ideal for both unzipping zips, and zipping up zips.

........Huh?!

What the ........???

I know you believe that I understand what you believe I think I read, but I'm not sure that you realize that what you wrote could not possibly be translated to Polish since it contains far too few consonants and way too many vowels and it exhibits a pronounced alliterative propensity to perambulate through a polysyllabic vocab .... aw the heck with it.

Just got thru the twists of assigning Shortcut Keys to my calculator, Snippy Tool etc.

The general answer Just use Win+R, calc, Enter....
That simple....
Mind you I argue that Ctrl+Shift+C is a better option.

No need to bait you Grog, You'll get enough of that when you decide to make a Chart in Excel 2016, AND have your own opinion about how you want it to look.....

I use LibreOffice Spreadsheet. I have not noticed any issues. Excel is Microsoft's product, so that might be the issue....

I hear you though. I used to be tearing my hair out when I was using MS Word, trying to place a photo or something, and MS Word INSISTED it knew best on where to put it.

Never had that problem since I started using Open Office, then Libre Office. I stopped using Open Office, as it had grown to such a gargantuan size it was almost bigger then MS Office. Libre Office is smaller, but does the same stuff, and works well.
