Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Things might be looking up ... a little.

I decided to get the system disk in my new desk top organized. It's a 3 TB Hitachi/IBM? with wind 10 pro installed. I had a bunch of my data files in separate directories (not under Bill Gate's ridiculous user directory). I wanted them in another partition. Only about 600 GB of the 3 TB was being used.

I first used Perfect Disk to try to move all the files to the beginning of the disk.

Then I used disk management to shrink the system partition to 1 TB leaving 2 TB unallocated. Then I formatted the empty 2 TB as drive H: and moved my data directories to drive H:. So far so good.

Just to check that everything was kosher I then ran chkdsk c:. It reported an error and told me to run chkdsk c: /scan. It reported no errors. I ran chkdsk c: again and it reported the same error. Uh oh, enter loop, never exit loop.

I ran ControlPanel > System > Maintenance > which said there were errors in the second copy of the MFT and offered to fix them. I let it try to fix them.

After 11 hours windows rebooted and everything is fine!

Disk Management had apparently messed up the MFT when it shrank the partition but the maintenance functions were able to fix it up. Hmpff. First it broke it, then it fixed it. I think that's an improvement .... maybe.

When you play with drive partitions and don't have a backup system in place before you start, i'd say that's not to long a wait

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Yes, well, I would have to agree that W10 does seem to be full of hot-air most of the time. Somehow though, 'Fart 10' just does not have the same ring to it as your typo.

@grogs -- Hmpfff ... who said 'wind 10' was a typo.

@greybeard -- It's wind 10. I make daily file copies of everything using robocopy and weekly image copies using Macrium reflect.

I was a little concerned about Macrium's ability to restore the image. The image was made of the disk with just the reset, the rescue, and the c: partition. I wasn't sure how it would restore after shrinking the c: partition and formatting the h: partition.
