Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Following on from my other thread, I thought I would post this in a new thread, as it looks exceedingly interesting.

PiBakery OS builder for Raspberry Pi

...and a link to the actual website for the article above:

PiBakery Website

The download is 1.5GB, available for Windoze and MAC, and aparently a Linux port is coming.

Appears to be a very easy way to build a custom Pi image, so I am going to play with this.

It looks very interesting BUT what on earth happened that the FIRST operating system you'd expect it DEFINITELY to be on (Linux!) isn't yet supported!!

Mind boggling.

My guess is that they thought that people would be using MAC's and PC's to build and write the images for their Pi's, so.....

Only a guess though.

I thought that too but it's still weird!

Still, an interesting thing.

With 95% of the desktops running Windows it is not such a strange thing to target those.
I find it amazing they take the time to make a Linux version to satisfy the 5%. :)

Hmmm, my antivirus etc tool Bullguard reports all manner of problems with PiBakery and refuses to let the install complete. Reports include Adware and named trojans, all dating from 2014.
Has anybody else had these issues?

More than 95% won't go near Linux (Raspbian) on a Pi, though :)

Never even heard of 'Bullguard'. How reliable is it?

BullGuard is a UK based app, from memory. I've been using it for around 5 years now and it has proven very reliable to date. I'll try installing PiBakery again later to see if the problems replicate. If so, I'll maybe turn off BullGuard for the duration of the install.

IMHE (in my humble experience) I have noticed Bullguard to be very-in-your-face. I don't want to step on others' pet AV programs, but I've been using the ESET product for over 20 years now, both for me & my clients. Never had a problem (touch wood) & minimal false positives. It rates very highly in the AV comparative world; what I really like it for is a very minimal install footprint & resource usage. It's only in your face if there's something you REALLY need to know.

OK, I'm biased because I'm a reseller for it, but I haven't found anything "better" in the 20+ years I've been using & recommending it...

There's a saying in the industry - if the product is "free" then what it really means is that YOU are the product! - they have to monetise it somehow.

What Bullguard may be objecting to is the often bundled "extra" stuff that comes with mainly, but not always, "free" software. ESET will flag this & offer to remove it (your choice). How many of us have not noticed that already ticked "also install this u-beaut software" box when we've been installing something. That is often how the "free" software is paid for.

Enough rant - welcome to the world of the Internet...

Thanks Brian, I suspect the problem BullGuard is finding is in the extra stuff hitching a ride with PiBakery but haven't had time to get back to trying a fresh install. I have used ESET previously, on my old Acer Netbook running a rehashed version on XP. Nothing else seemed to be able to co-exist with that operating system.
