Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I picked up (& paid for) a Powertech 18650 Li-ion 2600mAh cell from a Jaycar agent today for a project.

I put it in a holder I had for the other Powertech cell I have & it was a very loose fit. I measured them both & the new one was ~5mm shorter that the older one. The diameters appeared to be the same.

My original holder is a 3D printed one & the battery was a bit of a tight fit it that. I also bought a couple of holders today, one for each of the cells & hoping to replace the 3D one. Of course, the older cell will not fit into the new holder. Bugger.

The code on the original one is SB2403 (which is still OK) & the new one is SB2308 whatever they mean.

Not really a major problem, just a bit of a nuisance.

At least the newer one has a higher rated capacity.

Just saying.....

Could it be that the longer one has a built-in protection circuit, like this:

and the shorter one does not?

That's a very good point. Thanks.
No mention of it on the battery though but that doesn't mean much.
Will keep it in mind when I test them out.

But generally Beware, a protection circuit could be incompatible with a charging circuit or when there is no protection at all ... Li-Batteries are great firecrackers!

I still stick to 3 X 1.2V NiMh instead.
