Hi All,

Anyone familiar with ESP-Link?

Been using it on all my MM's for years so I can connect to their consoles via Wifi with MMedit or Tera Term.

They work like a treat.

BUT, pull two spares out today that were all configured etc, but set to an old SSID.

So you scan for them with the Wifi connection thingo & connect to them in AP mode connecting to something like ESP_1234, no password etc.

Then you go to 192.168.4.1 to configure them.

Problem is Win10 decides to drop the Wifi connection to them as it can't detect an internet service on their AP.

If you work quick enough you can get them to scan for you AP's & connect to one, but it takes a few tries to get it done before Win10 dumps the connection to it.

Anyone know how to stop Win10 dropping a connection just because there is no Internet service found on it?

It's seriously painful compared to doing it in Win7 which will happily stay connected to the ESP when it's in AP mode.

Thanks

Phil.

Hi Phil

The (very) few times I've had to connect to a WiFi with no Internet I've not noticed any Win 10 disconnects. What MS message do you get (if any)?

The longest case in point was using 3 Win 10 laptops to monitor a WiFi webcam for a theatrical production - 4-5 hours continuous over several days. The WiFi was provided by a TP-Link AP to which the cam & laptops all stayed connected seamlessly. There was no Internet. Which Windows are you running. Pro or Home, & what build version of Win 10?

I've been aware of some networking issues where the fix was to set the various Windows services to auto start instead of manual start - maybe manual mode stops the service when MS "thinks" it's not needed...

The 3 laptops I was using for the theatre webcam were bog standard setups, both Home & Pro Win 10. Perhaps MS doesn't like the "no password" environment - it usually chucks up warnings about same. I did have a password on the theatre WiFi.

Hope any of this helps.

Cheers

Thanks Brian.

Win10 Pro,

C:\Users\Phil>ver

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.18362.418]

And Yes the ESP's have no PW in default AP mode.

Also found I needed to disable Auto connect on my normal SSID's that were visible otherwise it would jump back to one of them.

Having thought about this a bit I've come to the conclusion that it's not a Win 10 issue as such. Having said that, there's definitely disconnections happening, & why doesn't Win 7 have the same issue - a puzzle. How to track? I'd want to check the WiFi adaptor power setting in Windows - explore the settings in Device Manager for the adaptor & make sure the "turn off device to save power" is disabled. Also check in the general power settings area & disable any references to power saving for USB, PCIe & anything else.

Because you had auto connect enabled for your other WiFi that would have been a normal result of a disconnect of the current connection. Possibly some outside interference (clash of channels) happening? Do you have any other RF generating device in the near vicinity - cordless phones have given me grief in the past.

I've run out of ideas...

Do have 2.4G cordless, but maybe it was the ESP's.

I do have 7 AP's here on the same SSID & managed by a controller.
They are grouped on different channels but it could contribute to the issue.

That said I returned to it a day later & prog'd 3 more with no issues.

Would have to say, running MM's on ESP-Link is so convenient.

Direct access to the console of all 7 scattered around the house.
Just love it.

Phil.
