Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

It has been a while since I last posted on here - so HI to you all after a very long time!

First things first - I hope you are all managing to keep safe out there bearing in mind the current (and terrible) situation that we are all facing. In the many places across the planet that TBS members cover - please STAY SAFE and look after yourselves!

Now for my question....

(background)
I have recently purchased three Chromebooks for my children so that they are each able to do their own individual research whilst they're off school.

My 7yr son has just finished building a Micromite Robot Buggy (being featured in the next edition of Practical Electronics magazine for anyone interested). Currently he is using my Windows laptop to control it BUT I want him to be able to use his Chromebook instead.

(And now for my question!!). Is anyone out there interfacing their Chromebook with a Micromite?

I have Googled - and long story short is that I can't see anything that stands out. I am after the equivalent of TeraTerm or PuTTY but without the need to be a Linux expert, or the need to replace the Chrome OS with a 'custom version'.

I am simply after an 'app' that I can download from the Chrome OS 'app store'.

If anyone has personally done this then please would you mind sharing which app you're using!

THANKS

WW

Don't the new Chromebooks run Android apps?

I did a search for "putty" on Google Play and a whole bunch of terminal emulators popped up.

Please keep us informed on this.

I know that in Parallax Propeller land, they mention Chromebook compatibility but I don't know if it's a generic terminal.

I'll investigate when I get back to base.

Hi Jim,

How do you physically connect to the MM from the Android device?

Hi WhiteWizzard,

I have installed Gallium OS on my chromebook.
Gives access to the UBUNTU repositories, and Debian.
Gallium OS is designed to work on Chromebooks.

Depending on the chromebook (memory), you can install it besides chrome OS.
Look at their website for compatibility (they list that for some 50 chromebook types)

I removed Chrome OS 5 years ago, never regretted.

I have a few MMs connected to RPis running ser2net.
That allows me to connect using TCPIP with anything  convenient, either within my network or anywhere in the world via a VPN.

The MMEdit test server is hanging off a RPi and has worked without issues for many years.

Hi TassyJim,

Very interesting. You are using pi's to convert from ethernet to serial.
Can you use that setup also the other way around.

Let me explain. For development I want to talk serial to a device that has an ethernet connection only. It is fixed IP, and can do telnet only (not ssh).
Main reason is I want to integrate that unit into a existing test environment, that works on serial.

MMedit test server ..? on a Pi ? running Linux .? MMedit runs on linux ? Enlighten me....

ser2net is initiated from the TCPIP side. There is no option to imitate a connection from serial.

MMEdit can connect to serial or TCPIP.

For the benefit of new users who don't have a micromite available, I set up one on a RPi. That is the test server.

Nothing to do with the running of MMEdit itself.
