Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

.... Could the CMM2 have been designed to boot from the SD card ... without the need of a mainline P.C. to load the ' firmware ' ? my site |

The question has been asked before. If not you, someone else. The answer is "no" While there has been a lot of firmware updating going on at the moment, this will settle down soon and updates will probably be a few times a year. Jim Edit. I should have said "No not for the foreseeable" Edited 2020-07-02 11:27 by TassyJim VK7JH MMedit  MMBasic Help |

What is it that separates it from ( say ) a Raspberry Pi ? Processor vs. controller ? The Pi ( pre version 4 ) evidently has enough on ROM or ? to start the boot . I am only curious and mean not the slightest negativity . Edited 2020-07-02 12:27 by hitsware2 my site |

I can't recall if the ST internal boot code supports SD reading - have a look at their site. I suspect it doesn't, in which case the answer is no. If that's the case, once programmed it could do so if that initial program added that feature, but that would still leave the overall answer as no. You don't need a PC, anything running Linux (for example) will do, if it can connect to the CMM2. E.g. a Raspberry Pi. I provided a detailed write-up. John |

Even if you could boot from SD card, wouldn't you still need a PC to obtain the SD Card image and then write it out to an SD Card? Even if you bought a pre-written "boot" SD Card, you'd still need a PC in order to apply firmware updates (as the CMM2 doesn't have Internet access to download updates directly). Of course, if you don't have a PC and you want a CMM2, then just buy a pre-assembled CMM2 (instead of a kitset), and live with the fact that a later firmware update is going to require someone with a PC (either way). |

The CMM2 has no provisions for connecting itself to the internet (ethernet / WIFI). Updates will require a PC regardless the update method (SD card / USB / etc..). Volhout PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

Even the RPi needs a machine such as a PC to create its boot SD. I'm now wondering who has no PC and not even something they could use or borrow yet would buy a CMM2. If they exist, get it programmed :) John |
