Not as much fun as doing it all yourself but a lot of old games. Retro Games "It is better to be ignorant and ask a stupid question than to be plain Stupid and not ask at all" |

hyperarcadesystems.com has vastly more old games than that. |

These “plug and play” options are OK, I suppose, but for anyone hanging out at TBS, a DIY approach is highly recommended! All of the required software is open source, so these guys are trying to make a buck by selling you pirated ROMs they have bundled and curated. Quite a shady business model :( The compute part is a no-brainer - a RPi 4 with RetroPie + whatever ROMs that turn your retrogaming crank (I’m partial to MAME i.e. the original arcade games, but it’s kind of fun to play the same game on a home console emulator e.g. many of the ports to the Colecovision were terrific, and fun to play in their own right). The gold standard for building your own USB arcade controller is the I-PAC, but lately a bunch of super cheap Chinese kits have flooded the market e.g. two joysticks, a dozen micro switch buttons and a USB interface for $40 - unbeatable if you have the skills, tools and time to make your own MDF or plywood enclosure. Many years ago, I plcked a middle course and bought a premade “Tank Stick” from X-Arcade, and rewired it with an I-PAC because the stock USB interface was crap. Whatever route you choose, 8-bit retrogaming can’t be beat. It’s like “Casablanca” is a better movie 80 years later than any of the crap Hollywood is producing these days! That looks like it is one of the hundreds of pandora box variants. Try to find a review on the exact one or you may get a mixed bag of results on any of them. They may say they have so many thousands of games but they may not be able to play them all well. They have some ethical issues there as well. Some I have are sh*t at so many games that don't even use them and have in some cases cannibalized them for parts. ON the parts side of things they seldom have really good parts. They generally have cheap knockoff sticks and buttons. The price on that particular one is rather high for what you are getting. Search for Pandora Box on Youtube to get informed and when you think you want to buy do some shopping around as the price on the same rig can vary by a lot. Try Banggood, FleaBay, etc. You may want to look into some of the panaply of handhelds that are coming out of China. I have a few of the best. This site has most of them. Still, do some Youtubing and get informed. They are a lot of very informative reviews. I still like my ODROID-GO Advance a lot and it is a bit of a DIY build it yourself kit. They call me Shai-Hulud (The maker) |
