Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Forum Index : Microcontroller and PC projects : I think it's safe to install the March Windows update now.

The printer problems introduced by the 3/9 update seem to be resolving slowly. New security updates will probably be released on Tuesday 4/13. Try to update your machines by next Sunday. Non-security updates sometimes come out on the fourth Tuesday which will be 4/27.

To update your machine first MAKE AN IMAGE BACKUP OF YOUR SYSTEM DISK, (Macrium Free is very good), then select Start > PC Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Resume updates and cross your fingers. Windows will scan the updates installed and then might offer you optional updates and drivers. It is usually safer to reject optional updates unless you are having a specific hardware problem. If it ain't broke don't fix it. If you do have a hardware interface problem which might be caused by an out of date driver it is better to download new drivers from the hardware manufacturers web site instead of letting Windows provide it.

If you do have problems with a specific update it is usually pretty easy to roll it back within Windows. Just click on Start > PC Settings > Update & Security > View Update History > Uninstall Updates, select a KB and click it > select Uninstall.

After your update completes and you find that the darned thing actually works it's time to defer future updates with Start > PC Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options and pick a new date well after next months update rollout dates.
