I may just be getting on a bit and losing the plot, but I can't seem to download the DOS version of MMBasic from Geoffs website.

Has it been relocated / gone missing, or have I just been looking in the wrong place

Joseph.

Strange. It just doesn't want to download on my new laptop... My phone downloaded it no problem, but not the laptop.

More investigation needed, I think...

Thanks for the response anyways

I have attached it to this thread as a ZIP - see if you can download it from this thread.

Alright, this bugged me a bit, so after a bit of faffing around I discovered it's the new version of Microsoft Edge that is causing the problem. After I switched to Firefox, all was well.

I haven't used Edge in years and it seems by default it doesn't let you do certain things, which you don't find out about until you're blocked from doing it

All sorted though. I have a copy, and I'll start plugging away at some ideas I have clattering about in my head.

Many thanks for all the help

I'm using Windows 10 Edge Version 90.0.818.56 to download it with no problem. What version do you have?

Oh, the joys of browsers...
For some reason I can no longer download stuff from Geoff's web site using Pale Moon (a fork of Firefox). Vivaldi is fine though. I don't remember using Edge on it.

Yeah, that sounds like Edge.

I think that this issue was caused by me switching the website to https: from the original http:  I did this because Google was complaining about my use of http:

The problems seem to only occur with downloads and with some browsers.  I need to do some work to figure out how to leave downloads as http: while the rest of the website is https:

Hi all,
Interesting comments. I can't download from Geoffg's site now either - I end up with an empty folder. I am using XP Pro SP3 with Firefox. ( An older non-supported version now.)

When MMBasic v5.05.03 came out I asked Phil Boyce (Mr. Micromite.org) for help. He emailed the folder to me.

With regards, Paul.

I sometimes find that Chrome will download in Incognito mode when it won't in Normal mode.

Best wishes,

I just quickly wanted to say that because I have a new laptop, the default security settings for Windows and Edge may well be interfering with things like this. I'm at work currently, so when I've finished I'm going to sit down and have a good look at this.

More to come

FYI I've used MS Edge since it came out in an upgraded configurable format, running the latest version of Edge and Geoffs site works perfectly, everything downloads correctly, including MMBasic for DOS.

Alright, two steps forward and one backward it seems. I was wondering if some setting in Windows was stopping me from downloading Zip files, so I went out and tested downloading a ZIP and a EXE file from various websites.

Both worked flawlessly. This got me scratching my head a bit, so I went to Geoffs site and tried to download a different ZIP file (which was also addressed using HTTPs), which worked fine. As far as I can tell, it was only that one file which seems to be giving me grief.

Anyhow, thanks to Grogster I was able to download the file off of this comment thread, so all is well.

I thought Windows or Edge security might have been at fault here, but no. It just seems to fall over on this one file. Just to aggravate things, Firefox downloaded it without a hitch.

I seemed to have picked a day to find a problem that most likely has a really obscure solution, or in the words of the immortal Lloyd Bridges - "Looks I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines"

Many thanks for the suggestions and feedback here. One day when I have some time and patience spare I will sit down and pick through this problem and see what happens when I get to the other side of the rabbit hole...

..."we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.

"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Oddly, I've just tested it and had no issue using Edge to access https://geoffg.net/WindowsMMBasic.html and download and run the file. Only Windows Defender complained about an unknown application, but that is not the issue here.

https://www.mmbasic.com/Download/DOS_MMBasic.zip gives me 404, as it seems that there's no file on the server.

That's one of the messages I get. I also get Error 418, but as far as I can tell, that is related to an April Fool's joke, so it's really puzzling me right now

Another data point.

Downloaded fine with Opera on W10 from the link on Geoff's site.

Yes. It's at https://geoffg.net/Downloads/WindowsMMBasic/DOS_MMBasic.zip

(different web site!)

It's also at http://geoffg.net/Downloads/WindowsMMBasic/DOS_MMBasic.zip

(Downloaded fine for me at both.)
