Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I think some people here may find this interesting:

There's MMBasic, then there's CSUBs, and then there's Verilog :-)

The video bit takes me back to the days of reading Don Lancaster's Cheap Video Cookbook. :)

I looked for a *cheap* FPGA board for experimenting with not long ago. They are about as common as rocking horse poo. :(

The Deca has all the bells and whistles (HDMI even) and costs only $37usd: https://www.arrow.com/en/products/deca/arrow-development-tools

I think the Deca is a great option if you know what you're doing. For learning, Digilent's Arty A7 35T ($129usd) or the Go Board ($65usd) from NandLand.com are probably good options.

The DECA looks interesting...
Lol! Just glanced at the minimum spec for playing with it:
Windows 7, 64-bit or Windows 8, 64-bit
4 GB RAM
Minimum of i3 core

I've never had an i-anything CPU in my life. Nothing so advanced. :)

That's pretty hardcore, unless you mean you're using AMD Ryzen :-). Now I'm curious what you're using to browse this forum.

I'm pretty cheap myself. I still take on freelance jobs to sponsor my hobbies, just like I did when I was 12.

NandLand's Go Board is supported by an open source toolchain on Linux and OSX: http://www.clifford.at/icestorm/

Linux is supported on a wide range of devices, so maybe that's an option?

hehe - It's a Celeron N3450 at 1.1GHz on each of the two cores. Win 10 64-bit. 4GB RAM (non-expandable). Completely fanless and not even warm. It works for most things, but it's no gaming machine. :)
