This may be of iterest to some... Faster quantum computers "It is better to be ignorant and ask a stupid question than to be plain Stupid and not ask at all" |

it was PC, thanks this quantum thing is all a bit contradictory to me, we hear that "the US or China" has their QCs running a few computations etc but then also (as this article concludes) that they are tantalizingly out of reach. Think I'll stick with my silicon for a while. For me, the constant, frustrated, expectation has made QC, like fusion, buzzwords which I can use as a litmus test for editorial content (the promise of fusion having been with us for decades) and despite exciting progress, it seems to be "jam tomorrow"... Fusion has been 10 years away for the last 60/70 years - "limitless cheap energy, so cheap it won't be worth metering"... yeah right, try telling EDF they'll be giving it away. There was this article but that was seven years ago and we are still no closer. Where's my flying car!? ![]() I can't see QC being any different and with the way every society on the planet is going down the hyper-surveillance route is more likely to be subverted into a terrible tool to further suppress humanity rther than frees us... imagine facial recognition of a packed football stadium near-instantaneously, tracking every single member of society tracked in real-time etc... We aren't far from that now, with the explosion in computing power I think our over-lords would be very interested in that. all the wonderful dreams of yesteryear depended heavily on a big dose of altruism - which in the 3rd millennium has evaporated in the dreams of avarice and control. if they do finally manage to get it working, what will happen to all the encryption and digital signature algorithms we depend upon for the functioning of... everything? glass house for all cheers, rob :-) |

very good point. any brute-forcing can be completed in a few microseconds encryption on non-Q systems may become meaningless... one-time-pad would still likely be OK but anything relying on public-private keys or shared secret can kiss the baby. |

I agree. Many of these things are just pre bottled stories ready to be rolled out at a slow news time. All the catch words, " Could" " Might" " soon" " Believe" etc. Disclaimers that pretty much allow them to say and claim anything with a deniability clause. Yep, Just like the sewing machine size and weight engine I have been reading about since I was a school kid in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science That was going to do 500 Hp and get 150 Mpg and have next to no emissions. That's been just around the corner and " Could" Revolutionise the Motor Industry My entire life... and I still haven't seen it or anything other than the rotary engine that was still the same pistons thrashing up and down. That was before my time, they stated with that in the '40's , that I know of, could have been even earlier. People can't even see and obey Red lights and stop signs or park a car. Can you imagine people Trying to FLY one? And don't tell me computers will do it. They aren't reliable in $50M aircraft now. Then of course there is the maintence Factor. Exactly! Any BS about being for the betterment of man kind is exactly that, a great heaped steaming pile of Manure. EVERY technology these days is looked at with a view to weaponisation. They would turn it into smarter Missiles and Killer satellites and go from there. And with current events it will be passed of as " Public Health and Safety" which is the excuse the current agenda predicated on when it's really all about control and tracking. Conspiracy theories have become predictions of what will become not only reality in 6 Months, but common place. The sheeple will be told " Great news, You don't have to check in everywhere you go anymore, we have face recognition cameras to do it for you". Of course they will still probably want you to remove your Face nappy and sunglasses and make sure you look up at the camera. They already have that at the airport. When I went to NZ 4 Years ago they had it at sh*tney airport along with the new " Smart" passport I got when I renewed. Jam your passport into the machine and look at the camera keeping your eyes open. But it's still all regurgitated by the media to fill webpages and attract attention to their advertisers. Some things are completely different while still being exactly the same ! |

If you have access to BBC Iplayer, try watching the Panorama documentary Programme "Are you scared yet, human?" This investigates many issues from population surveillance all the way through to autonomous AI drones/weapons - see https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000wft2/panorama-are-you-scared-yet-human This analyses many of the issues that are being mentioned in this thread, and yes, I AM getting scared... It seems that those killer drones in 'Angel has fallen' are not so science fiction after all. When I look through my digital camera viewfinder and see the face recognition system following the subject across the screen, or when I set my drone in 'follow me' mode, I do get something a chill down my spine! |

One thing I haven't got into is drones although I have a fairly expensive one still sitting in the box in the cabinet behind me I haven't flown as yet. I was shooting on a beach probably 5 years ago now and there was a Chap with a DJI who was pretty into it. He flew the thing out from where we were standing behind the beach a few KM out over the ocean to a Container ship moored waiting to come in. Did a few circles and then came back. Could see the live footage on his phone and the tablet he handed me. He put a new battery in the thing and put it in that follow mode and it did slow circles around his wife and son as they walked and played down the beach. Amazing and that was not yesterday. I commented then on the great footage he would have of his family and what a great 21st vid he'd be able to make for the boy. I have not used the face tracking on camera's. Although they are bringing it into some models of supposedly Pro level camera's, I prefer the high end ones that leave more for the shooter to do than have the button for auto arse wiping to Pizza delivery and cold beer. The point is valid though, the tech is there and no doubt could be scaled up. It's a boon for many whom can get people properly in shot and focussed on them rather than the background behind. There are a couple of " Sports" cameras I know of and probably more that you set on a tripod or pole and will follow the action of a player running round a Field. Last time I looked I believe said player needs to have something clipped on them for the signal but none the less. When there are 20 Odd people on a field and these affordable cameras can follow one players every move and automaticly zoom in and out according to the action, that's..... Something. Scary and impressive. I did read and see a report about some guy in the middle easy that got taken out by a small drone. They simply put some explosive on the thing and flew it close to him while he was giving a speech at some Parade or something and took him out. It was a palm size thing that no one took any notice of not something you'd bethinking would take your head off with the blades alone. I doubt that was done with AI BUT, I also don't doubt it could be done now by those with the resources ( finances). even if the thing cost 10K, chicken feed compared to the cost of a Missile and with much less collateral damage. The fire services use them now for Fire bombing... as in dropping small fire Starters to form back burns. Used to be the domain of aircraft, now can do it with Drones. And it's not just Drones as in multi bladed choppers, The US has been flying their unmanned places for a decade or more and same thing. Lock onto a heat signature and the thing will follow it and fire guns or Missiles when given the command. If you contact Fleabay customer help online you are actually talking to an AI robot rather than a person. |

I suspect the next war will be drone based. The only real defense against a swarm is another swarm...the self-organising drone groups are astonishing and are much cheaper than top stealth hardware. And add quantum computers ? Ecch. At least wearing a covid mask will confuse the bastards ![]() PS Bloody mobile phones are bad enough. Edited 2021-08-15 11:34 by zeitfest |

"At least wearing a covid mask will confuse..." Not entirely, the latest AI also uses body posture, mannerisms and gait to identify people. |

Holly Ship! I did not know that! Going to have to wear one of those Sumo Suits.... maybe with reflective radar confusing streamers hanging off it. |
