Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

"Wordle" is a word guessing game that has become very popular here in the states with both web and phone version. You try to guess a game-generated 5-letter word by entering your own 5-letter words and looking at the color-coded feedback. It's pretty addictive!

My version for the CMM2 plays the same as the other versions, except that it probably uses a different dictionary. The dictionary I use derives from one published by Don Knuth ages ago, and contains about 5700 words, not ALL of the 5-letter English words by far, but enough.

Enjoy!

@Bill,

Thanks for that. Maybe I can get my grandson interested. He's not a good speller (takes after me).

My only concern is that the dictionary may contain some words that use American spelling and confuse him. Maybe I can run a spell check program over it.

Nice,

In Netherlands this game is called "Lingo". And it is a show on TV as well.

Nice game Bill (Leue). I'd heard of this and thought it would be a good educational thing for kids too. Never played it before but I did manage to win my first try - took five words and about 15 minutes but I got there!

Thanks for your effort.

Sorry about the US spelling! I am using a word list I found on the web, originally compiled by Don Knuth. It contains about 7500 words, but English (some version of it) reportedly contains more than 12,000 5-letter words.

The word file is just a text file, so you can easily change it; the program only cares about 2 things: the name of the file and its structure: each 5-letter word is standard ASCII with a 2-character delimiter. The program doesn't care what the delimiters are, just that they are 2 characters; in other words, the program assumes 7 bytes per word when it computes an offset for SEEK.

I will see your COLOR and raise you an ALUMINIUM!
