This is an Off Topic Rant/Question just kinda an I'm Overloaded Venting, so if this is Bad form Please just delete it and I'll never do it again! But here goes A little Back story I Live in smallish for the US 1 bedroom Apartment, having moved from larger Warehouse Apt, Years ago and have thinned down my collection of Stuff Considerably. But this week a dear old College buddy of mine brought me some boxes of new toys, Like a Ton of Arduino stuff, TI MSP 430 Stuff, ST Nucleo Boards and random Assortment packs of Caps and Resistors, From his Lab Clean out :) Ohh and Some Random Kick Starter Kits :) I'm gonna Build :). But now my Question is at what point is it worth spending the time to sort Random Resistors and store them when like last week I made an OEM order for Resistors for less than a penny each? the Same with STM Nucleo and MSP-430 Stuff I May or May never use , I never was a C++ Programmer, now the Arduino stuff lots of projects to copy or steal from so OK I get that but I have these issues like going though this Huge tub of Cables that weigh a ton, I found all kinds of random cables I have no use for EVER but can't force my self to throw away and aren't worth trying to eBay. Example I have a few SUN, V.35 and HPIB cables I Remember paying huge money for way back when. They ain't worth the trouble of filling out the shipping label and dealing with ePay, so at what point do I just recycle them? sorry about the rant but I'm so overwhelmed, and I'm real interested in how you guys deal with kind of thing, especially being most of you are British or European, and Don't generally have the same amount of disposable Space as we do here! There's no point in keeping cables if you've nothing to plug them into, especially if you're unlikely to get something to plug them into. It doesn't matter how much they cost originally - they have no current value to you, so yes - get rid of them. :) The quicker you do this the better as the longer you keep them the longer you'll want to. Resistors & caps can be worth keeping, especially if pre-sorted in packs. All tangled up in a box is something else. Remember, electrolytics have a finite life and may not be worth keeping if over ten years or so old. You may end up having to replace them. Unless you're into very low power the MSP430s are pointless (& may be even then). The nucleos may be useful - e.g. for Armmite / CMM2 - depends what they are. I guess (!) the Arduinos may include sensors etc. Try to pass the unwanted stuff along to ... er, whoever you can (school kids? hackspaces?) John |

John, Even though that is True, it Breaks my Heart because the MSP430 is a direct descendent of the TI-990 instruction set, Being our Home Town Thermo Nuclear Missile Processing Unit, Made spitting Distance from my House. Growing up in the North Dallas in the 70;s and 80's we were Keenly aware if the USSR decided to let Loose, we were top of the list living so close to TI Interesting Trivia most people believe T.I. stands for Texas Instruments, but if you ask any TI'er they will tell you it's really Training for Intel, because TI is where your Intel Career starts :) Arduinos did include a ton of sensors, this will be the time consuming part figuring it out I may be Vulgar, but , while I'm poor, I'm Industrious, Honest, and trustworthy! The Msp430 is not that hard to program if you use the energia Ide. The enegia ide gives you an arduino C-like language to program in, and an arduino-like envirement, - dressed in red instead of blue. It's got a rather large collection of libraries surporting sensors and com-devices, and more libs to find in different fora. You should give it a try, before you ditch the boards! As per JohnS, I would donate. Focus on the Mites. I just got roasted for suggesting a PM where some guy was (unsuccessfully) fiddle-farting around with discreets. Honestly, even as a smart peripheral, quit wasting time and stick a PM in there for a few measly bucks ![]() Craig |

If it has more than zero value to you, keep it - don't think of the original price. Get rid of the stuff that's worth zero to you. If you're in a small apartment, keeping stuff costs you space. |
