Can you change the Editors font size and number of characters on screen.

The settings depend on the screen MODE you have as default.

I recommend reading the manual OPTION section.

One that will interest you is:
OPTION EDIT FONT SMALL |NORMAL | MEDIUM | LARGE|VERY LARGE
