Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Forum Index : Microcontroller and PC projects : Thunderbird......Sigh.  Perhaps time to flap off....

I have been having amazing amounts of issues with Thunderbird lately.
Any of the members seen this?

Version 100+ point-something....it's all a blur, but I can find the EXACT version if anyone wants it.

/START OF RANT:
This thing has grown from a REALLY GOOD, sleek, well maintained email client, to the kind of behemoth that the evil truck from Duel would be proud of.  You just about need a dedicated OS, just to run this thing now.  I'm not raining on TB per-se' - many current applications are damn near an OS in and of themselves.

I mean - the PLETHORA of settings you can change in an application like this today, seems DESIGNED to confuse even the technically minded.

TB won't allow you to down-grade, won't allow you to download previous versions, and if you MANUALLY downgrade to an older version that WORKED, TB refused to allow you to import the profile, claiming it is not compatible, cos the LATEST version has somehow screwed with the profile, so you CAN'T just downgrade to a version that actually worked...

Bit of a rant, sorry.

Anyway, the main problem with this version of TB, is that all links are NOT clickable, and everything seems to be in "Edit" mode - all objects are INDIVIDUALLY clickable, and NOTHING works together as a simple email should.

You can't add attachments, you can't open any attachments - TB insists that these files are dangerous, and there is no obvious way to CHANGE that.  TB moans if ANYONE you try to reply to, is not in the approved senders list.

Damn.....

The latest TB, compared to the earlier versions that JUST WORKED......would drive a teetotaller to drink, I mean, seriously.
/END OF RANT.

What is up with Mozilla.
I don't use FF anymore due to the constant updates.

My browser is Duckduckgo which means no ads and therefore I have stuck with mail.com.
I only started with mail.com because of the free email accounts but the ads were really irritating. Now with duckduckgo, I'm really liking their email client. All kinds of other neat stuff in there as well.

Currently running 115.13.0 ok so far.
No ads on this or or on FF browser.
I did run chromium web browser, only for sites that didn't like TB, but it has heap of options to switch on or off and not know what they all do.

I have started to try out Vivaldi Browser. So far it is going really well. I had been using Flashpeak Slimjet but it started to slow down for unknown reasons. Really no obvious reason found. Vivaldi also includes  mail, calendar and sync functions among others. Have not tried these. Search it out and see what you think.

go to your favorite search engine and 'searx' for "thunderbird old versions" then you will find this: https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ and download/run what you want. even multiple thunderbirds at the same time. Have a look at the profile.ini within the %appdata% /windows) or .thunderbird (linux) folder. you can set the "default" profile by replacing a text entry.

I use Thunderbird, and Firefox, no problems but I do get the upgrades rant.
I dont' get why we have to keep upgrading. When something just works why not leave it be.
I did find a very good extension for Firefox today.
It is called DeTrump.
What it does is changes all the articles on websites that you set to allow you to replace his photos automatically and also it changes the articles to make them funny and as ridiculous as he is.
The ABC news sit is now readable again. Instead of the Orange Flee Bags moniker there all the time the photos are replaced by photos of puppies. you can choose what you want the glowing one replaced with.

I use Thunderbird and FF on Fedora Linux with the Plasma environment. No problems. Thunderbird did have some problems a few years ago with its plugins but don't see any problems these days. I also sometimes use encrypted email and this works just fine.

For Windows 10, I use with no problems. I don't do email on Windows so cannot comment on any problems with Thunderbird and Windows.

@ Pete - Glen does not want ANY political talk on the forums, so....just a wee reminder about that.  You may not have been aware of that rule, I'm not sure, so just a wee reminder.  I get that it is really in everyone's heads at the moment, but the original rule still stands. "There are other forums for that" as Glen himself said.

I found a few links to things to fix the hyperlinks, involving you drilling down into the depths of the TB settings and config files, but none of it works.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling - does not help.  Original problem remains in that you can't click on anything, can't upload or open attachments, and can't even REPLY to emails if the sender is not in the approved list - this is all nuts.

I guess I could try posting a thread on the TB forums, but I expect they will tell me to do exactly what I have already done, and that is not working, so I'm kinda lost.
Might be worthwhile doing though.  I was rather hopeful that the members here would have seen this issue and know how to fix it.
But you simply never used to have this level of issues with TB in the past.  Sigh....

As I mentioned, it's not just TB, they're ALL making their applications into bloatware now as far as I can see.  Take the modern version of MS Office.  Just opening a file is a PITA compared to the old FILE/OPEN... method that just worked....

Hell, I'm off on another rant now!
Better stop!

Not seeing your issues.
Viewing / downloading attachments ok.
Uploading attachments ok.
Clicking links opens the link in a browser window.

Mozilla Thunderbird 128.4.2esr (32-bit) with automatic updates on Win10 64 bit.

Could Anti-Virus or Windows security settings be the real issue?

Thanks for the reminder Grogster. I will remember that.
I used to use Opera as a browswer and Eudora email many years ago.
I do miss the simple lightweight software packages.
I use Ubuntu on my computer but even then the software and security updates are huge.
Maybe time to go back to using Puppy linux.
I get it, today I installed recommended security updates that were around 250 megabytes.
Crikey my first computer only had a 20 megabyte hard drive
end rant

20MB??????
Mine had a cassette drive to save its 960 bytes of user RAM on.

No-ne will ever need more than 640K of RAM.

There will probably be a need for about five computers in the world.

:)

(You aren't supposed to install Puppy on a HDD. :) It's lovely! An excellent Windows rescue tool.)
