Is there a very simple bitmap file structure ? I thought a bmp file would be trivial to create but now I see there are quite a few additional fields etc.

Just after something that a program can write to a sd card and then allow a quick visual check in windows.

ppm ascii files followed by ppm binary are probably the easiest. See here
