Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

My daughters laptop that has been upgraded from Win 10 to Win 11 has been trying for 6 months to install the 24H2 update. It gets to 63% then fails. There is 300GB of free disk space. I pause updates for 5 weeks (the max.) but I'm  getting sick of it.
Any one have an answer.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one, as I am having my own hate-battle with W11 policies at the moment.

You MIGHT be able to download the entire update package and apply it that way.
You USED to be able to download things like that as a service-pack, and install it as you would any other application.

You could search Mr. Google for something like "Offline install of W11 24H2" or "Download W11 24H2 for install offline" - something like that.

This kind of stuff has been happening more and more to me.    What I have found is when an update fails, it usually spits out some cryptic (and long) error number.   Strangely, the error number usually is hexadecimal.   It would seem for end users it should be decimal.

But anyways...   If you go to Yahoo and type the error number into the search box there will be a lot of other people with the same problem.   And almost always one of the top search hits will be a "How to fix error code 123498765 during a Windows update".

Tried searching the error number, didn't help. I think Grogster has the answer, I already use Linux on my machines, just have to convince my daughter.

There is a simple solution to ALL of these never ending issues and that is Superlite (or similar.)

"Linux" is a much better answer, together with a vow never to touch software that needs Windows ever again. :)

Quote  It is important to note that while Superlite Windows offers performance benefits, it may lack some features and security protections found in standard Windows versions. Additionally, it is not officially supported by Microsoft, which means users should exercise caution and ensure they download from trusted sources.

Translation: Microsoft is no-longer able to screw you over.

I just need my machine to fire-up and work without ads and weather/news reports.

I was seriously considering switching to Linux until someone (Grogs or Big Mik) brought Superlite to our attention and I went from loathing to loving my Windows machines.

You're a sad case...  ;)
How can you use the words "Love" and "Windows" in the same sentence unless it's something like "I love looking out of windows" or "Most people love to finally get rid of Windows!"? :)

Yeah I probably went a bit overboard with that but I had the exact same problem that palcal's daughter is having. It would keep insisting on applying the update and then, after ages of waiting, "failed...uninstalling" and I couldn't get rid.

I don't care about "security updates" because my system is only used for development and I store my data on DropBox.

To be hassle-free, it was worth the cost of Rollback Rx should anything nasty find it's way to my machine.

Does anyone have the issue I am having. My Windows update has never even listed the 24H2 update.  I have been on 23H2 forever and have never been given the update as an option, and they are now preparing for 25H2 to be released!!!  They give no reason or and all I can find to make it upgrade has failed so far.  I find it Infuriating that I can't talk to a Microsoft Tech support person about this issue.  All the articals say there could be several reasons I have not been slated for 24H2 update but there is no way to determin what may be the issue.  All the articles just say do these Arcane rites on your PC, and you'll magically get the update. Yeah, I've done a lot of magic lately. None of it does anything.

If you are willing to create a disk (or bootable USB stick) you can use the $MSFT Media Creation Tool to get the 24H2 update.    You just go to:

Windows 24H2 Update

And Option #2 will get it done.    With that said, I would probably do Option #3 and just zap some entries in the Registry that tell Windows to hurry up and pull down the update.
