Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I'm wondering the same thing, I notice a bid difference between the Windows version and the Linux version, loads faster and has an extra menu option for sending the binary compile code to you Home launch directory, I did not have to install it, it appears to run from the Appimage, new to Linux so I could by wrong?

It's not populated with all the addon's like the Win version and the only trace I can find is a folder in the root\tmp folder which is wiped empty when the IDE closes, AFAIK it does not try to connect to any Arduino server or web locations like the full Win install version.

I'm not into net debate about VPN and security, my thoughts are that one may be needed to help bypass the police state overreach that will block/filter the internet in various countries, which is spreading around the globe.

Does anyone who uses a VPN have an opinion on any that don't log session data or are not already compromised. I was looking at protonvpn ?

Bryan1 said  Well looks like I may just have to load up my old laptop with this Zorin-18 as I did find while trying to do a update that was close to a gig using my starlink mini which was strangled and could only get 70Kb.   So though just leave going for a few hours only to find this new OS decided to require a login every 5 minutes and about 5 hours later got 90% downloaded then decided to pack up the mini.

I had the offer of a free mini from starlink (on loan until I cancel my main Starlink account), I thought there would be a catch, but no, I get free emergency low speed Internet access at no cost when high speed plan is paused, or when I don't have a plan.

I tried it on general internet browsing, this forum and emails etc and it was brilliant. Will be great if my Main starlink get damaged or fails, at least I can do banking and emails and browsing etc, without having to use mobile data and the mobile network.

I also get half price full speed Mobile Stralink plans when I want to travel, and I can pause it when not in use.

BTW I find the slowdown is often the Net itself, or sites, as I can speed check to most test servers at very high speeds and low ping.

This Reddit thread Reddit Thread has a good Google Sheets table of better known VPN's and grades them on many attributes such as data data retention, country of origin etc.
It also has another Google Sheets table of browser based free VPN's if anyone just wants sparingly adhoc access.

Thanks for the info, Firefox didn't have a VPN for Linux the last I checked, but was close to releasing one.

I'm sold on the New Brave browser, there is little forum or user feedback as yet as the only stuff I can find is for the old Versions, this new version is very slick.

When I've finished all this program installation and removals and finally have everything I need selected and tested, and learn how to cleanup effectively in future, I will start with a fresh install of the OS and do everything right with what I have learned so far.

Got visitors for a few days, so away from the fun (sometimes not so) but it's been a lot easier then I thought it would be so far.

So I was looking at various quick backup options, including Timeshift and others, then I realized I had an app supplied in the Utility folder called Backup.

I'd remembered that I had enabled daily backups of the Home data.

It appears to do the same thing as Timeshift (I could be wrong), the App is actually "Déjà Dup" which is a GUI for duplicity, which I think uses the dd commands (?).

From what I have read it works fine and is supported directly and installed by Zorin, with a ton of help inbuilt into the Zorin OS help App including duplicity if you ever have a problem.

VPN: I decided to grab the black Friday offer for NORD VPM, it works beautifully and has  really good detailed informative help info right from the User logon page on the website.

At this stage I'm not worried about cloning the installation. I plan to reinstall the OS and restore the Home settings, then install the apps that I've decided to use and do a clone backup after it's all running, then set automated daily Incremental backups with "Déjà Dup"

Sigh so much more to learn.

EDIT: Totally sold on the New Brave browser, but sometimes I want to use another browser depending on the sites I 'm looking at:

FYI: I found LibreWolf 144.0.2-1 which is a custom version of Firefox with the primary goal of privacy, security and user freedom, according to the speil. It's certainly cut down in the Settings and has a few interesting options, I'm sure it's been mentioned here before, anyway I like it.

Waterfox - another Firefox-like Gecko browser - is nice too. Available for Windows, MacOS, Android and as a deb for linux. Mint can handle those.

Thanks, yes I had a read about Waterfox, however the LibreWolf browser is very tight with what it will allow you to modify or any extensions you try to install install, so I went for it after the many security reviews and testing I read.

BTW I don't download snap packages in Zorin. I hardly use any Flatpack and now go for the.deb packages etc.

I also added another software package search / download app as well.

I'm new to Linux but obviously aware of the dangers of shady packages and downloads, I usually go to the developers site first, have a look, and then do a comprehensive search for any dangers or problems with this developer and the App I'm interested in downloading and download site history and reports.
