I just built up one of Ben's PCB's.

Altronics SD card holders are out of stock by the way too. Case and switch, too.

I used a "RECOM R-785.0-0.5" in my build.

This is a little switch-mode 5V convertor that fits in place of 7805.

Current drain is 60mA from 12v supply.

Hi Glenn

I like the idea of switchmode drop in replacement for the 7805
I can t seem to find a supplier for the RECOM R-785.0-0.5 could let me
know were to source them from

Element14 have them, but they are expensive.

While altronics haven't had the right switch for months, it turns out that there is another one that is centre off, momentary up that works fine. Its a drop in replacement.

carefull with the low current rail as the original does get quite warm much of the add on gear requires this rail rather than the 3 point 3 even my self i am about to use a don embedded to drive five five volt relays ..switched on and of at approx 15 seconds at a time as a constant loop i think that if you lower this current rail things are not going to be able to cope esp the reg its self ...well thats my op ..constructive critisism welcome...regards sparky....Edited by sparkey 2011-07-22

The Recom simply lowers the input power consumption, as it it more efficient than the Linear regulator.
The Recom I used (from an old PCB) can easily supply 500mA at 5V out.
