Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Been a while - but got the motivation to keep going with this project.

I ran the EM406 GPS module for a while and during a recent 2000km trip got it down to some pretty good results compared to the road tripmeter. The resulting software used the lat/long information from each set of data to calculate the distance rather than using the speed. I also ditched the angle correction as it added very little to the distance recorded, even in the forest.

In order to make the final product a bit more flexible I added a GPS 'fudge factor' so the tripmeter could be calibrated. On the trip I had it set to 1.016 - i.e. 1.6% added to each distance calculation to match the road book in use for that journey.

I've now obtained a couple of UP501 GPS modules that claim to do 5 or 10Hz navigation fixing. So far the 5Hz seems to work OK. The UP501 has an external battery backup for fast re-starts and you can save the required output settings into it's own eeprom to eliminate the need to set up the GPS every power up. Plus it's quite a bit smaller than the UP501 and fits in the case eaiser. Nice.

That gps wander is actually pretty good, i have seen a lot worse.
May times it get worse when you park close to a wall (at least 45% of the sky obscured) or in a street with tall buildings you get problems because of canyoning. Edited by TZAdvantage 2012-12-26
Microblocks. Build with logic.
