My order notification came on Thursday, so I ordered it and my Pi's been baked right now (sorry, just had to say that  ) and it should be cooked (ouch!  ) and in my letterbox in 6 weeks.
I have several uses planned for mine, including using it to give the Maximite a colour video output over composite (I'm too squeamish to modify my Maximite so it has colour VGA but as the Pi has a serial port and composite/HDMI out I figured I can write a program to do graphics over the serial port with far more than 8 colours, and potentially far higher resolution )Capacitance is futile - roll on 2012! |

At the Ann Arbor, Michigan Mini-MakerFaire a robotics club member had the Rasberry-Pi running. He had just received it a week earlier and had it driving a VGA monitor, reading a keyboard and mouse and running some simple Linux code. He has plans to control a robot from it. He was excited about it but I could not get a clear understanding of why it was better for his robot projects than any other module. I asked him about the Maximite and he drew a blank look. The biggest problem with the Pi is that it was conceived by "educators," who spend their lives essentially isolated from the real world. They came up with this fantasy concept of a $25 computer, to be used to teach young people programming. Never mind that the $25 concept has already proven impossible, and there is absolutely no proof that young people even want to learn programming. What's more, there is absolutely no way that any of this will be ready for the next school year, nor has it been established that any school is even interested in the project at all, much less there being an approved curriculum involving the Pi. The "educators" determined way ahead of time that there would be an official Linux distro supporting the PI. Yet this was before such a distro even existed. The essentially first draft of this "official" distro has long since proven to be a failure, but the educators refuse to admit it. In fact, the educators either stone-walled, or else just plain lied, about the status of the project, each and every step of the way, since the bogus "launch" back in February. Nobody could ever get an honest answer from them, and anyone who tried was immediately labeled as a troll. I supported the project, in the first week of March, by paying in full for a PI board. Here in the Philippines, cash is the only accepted method of payment. No credit cards or PayPal. I went to a local bank, and deposited the funds into the Farnell account. This included the basic price, shipping, and VAT, pushing the price up close to $50. The latest delivery estimate for me is still months away! But, by now, as has happened to so many people, I have pretty much lost interest in the project. Add to that the increasing number of dead on arrival boards, and it's pretty much time to just write it all off as a lost cause -- as is frequently the case with any project sponsored by "educators." |

The Rasbberry Pi is very successful, there are tens of thousands of them out there, and hundreds of thousands on order. There was a production delay whilst they sought various certifications for the boards. The forums are very lively, over 20,000 members. http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/ Lots of people seem to be programming with them, or at least posting in the programming forums, so I would say it's on the path the designers were hoping for. |
