Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Guys I am using a LM317

To go from 11 volts to 3 volts

Runs hot.

Do they make small switch mode regs ?

One guy suggested mobile phone charger to get from 12 down to 5 then go 3 volts

Andrew,
You might want to consider some SimpleSwitcher from TI. I have used LM2595 many times and they run very well.

Could be worth a look at the schematics on the Olimex site. They use all manner of chips & voltages. All open hardware.

Hi Andrew. How about the 1.2 to 20 volt switching regulator at 1.5 amps in Silicon Chip Feb 2012 with no heat sink.

The LM1117-N is a series of low dropout voltage regulators with a dropout of 1.2V at 800mA of load current. The pin-out is similar to industry standard LM317. It is available in five fixed voltages 1.8V, 2.5V, 2.85V, 3.3V, and 5V.
