I sold my Picprogrammer cause I thought i did not need it anymore

I got interested again.

I tried to buy one from Don, sold out

I got one from Bulgaria.
Does not work

I tried to upgrade the firmware
Does not work

I bought a PicKit3 programmer - does not work out of the box
I tried to install MPLAB on the CDROM that came with Pickit3 - corrupted CDROM

Is someone telling me something ?

As I recall, I didn't have any luck with the CD rom that came with pickit 3 and so downloaded MPLABX-v1.60-windows-installer from microchip. It was about 311 MBytes and came with MPLABX IPE (integrated programming environment). It all worked perfectly.

Did any lights come on when you plugged the programmer into the usb?

Ok

Time for some good luck

1. Downloaded what was supposed to be on the CD-ROM
2. PicKit3 seems to work - it is asking for a PIC to be connected

Now for a cable from PicKit3 to ICSP header

What sort of connections can this thing support ?

Is it you have to power down your PIC and program it and then disconnect the programmer ?

Did you get a big poster with the pickit 3? It shows all the connections.

If not, pin 1 on the programmer is indicated by a little triangle.

Power down your pic and make sure that the PIC pins MCLR, PGD and PGC are disconnected from the rest of the circuitry. Preferrably unplug the PIC and plug it into a bread board or purpose built socket.

Connect pickit pins as follows:

pin 1 to PIC MCLR

pin 2 to PIC vdd (3.3 to 5v pos)

pin 3 to PIC vss (0v)

pin 4 to PGD

pin 5 to PGC

You will need a 4k7 to 10k resistor from MCLR to vdd (across pins 1 and 2)

Apply power to the PIC.

Fire up MPLAB (or MPLABX) and follow instructions???

That should do the job but I've never used one.

Keep me posted how you go. I'm always interested in "grass roots" programming.

I am a tad confused

I used to have to power down the PIC to program it on my olimex board

I thought the programmer needed exclusive access to the PIC ?

My board has a 10 k between VDD and MCLR

Unsure about LVP - will see

I got a PICkit3 clone. Just works.

Some boards need to be powered as the PICkit3 doesn't provide much power.

Microchip say things to do about MCLR as people posted and I just followed the rules.

The pickit 3 doesn't supply any power to the target pic. It only provides a high voltage for driving the MCLR as necessary. You still have to apply power to the target pic unlike the SiliconChip programmer and others which supplied the vdd to the target pick.

LVP should be able to be ignored as the MCLR should override its setting.

Your cct diag looks like it provides its own vdd. The c11 on the MCLR pin worries me a bit unless it is only a few pF. The pickit 3 instructions say not to use capacitors on MCLR as it affects fast transitions. Try it as is and see how it goes.

I have a (original) pickit 3 and it can provide power. In mplab you can switch it on and off.
In most cases i disconnect the normal power supply when programming.
I also like to unplug everything before programming just to make sure that other circuitry connected does not have influence.
