I've been looking for some hobby club to join, occasionally spend some time talking to other people with same interests, have a beer discussing someone's new board and in general things like those...
Is there anything like that in the Melbourne area? I know such hobby clubs - robotics/electronics exist in Europe and USA but so far I've been unable to find one around except for schools and uni's.

I wish you luck. But being in a city environment you might have more luck than me.

I have been trying to get a group going in my locality for a few years now. There is a HAM operators group but they have no interest in general or other than radio electronics.

Have you tried googling electronics hobby groups?

Try searching for Hackerspace in your local area.

A lot of the Amateur radio clubs have microelectronic sub-groups especially in the larger cities.

In Thailand Bangkok there are enough electronic enthusiast. They surely have places to meet. Not found any yet.
Unfortunately i not master the language yet, so that makes it more difficult.
I am mulling over starting a hacker space, i have a 3d printer, soon a lasercutter and cnc that could be shared. I still plan to buy a pick&place machine and a 3 stage reflow oven. It would be so much easier when costs could be divided among more users.
Finding a location is hard, as a reachable by public transport location is very expensive.
If any of you ever are in Bangkok, i would be happy to meet fellow tinkerers, and i can give you a few tips where to go and stay. :)

Hi TZ,

Ever think of shifting to Melbourne? With all your gear of course...

I have been to Thailand about 7 or 8 times and we may be coming your way next year... Phuket would be a definite but I am not sure that we will get to Bangkok,

I will chase you up if we do..

Mick,

Have you checked out the Melbourne Hackerspace? The local Hackerspaces look like good places for people interested in electronics and microcontrollers. Hmmm....that's everyone who reads this forum.

TZ ,

Have you asked any of the educational institutions that teach electronics? My local Institute of Technology (in Canberra) teaches woodworking and carpentry and supports a user group for Triton woodworking equipment. They meet in the evening after the courses have finished. Your educational institutions might support something similar for electronics because it would encourage students to apply what they learn in their courses and take some of the load off their teachers. Just a thought....

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the info,

I live in the `deep outer' NORTH WEST subs... so it is like an interstate trip to cross the CBD to get to `the other side' Besides, whilst I do miss the old HACKING (not the vandal version of hacking) club days, actually REALLY MISS them, I doubt I really could find serious time to attend these groups regularly, I hardly get to see my old mate Don more than once every 2 months or so and it used to be a regular Friday nighter...

Regards,

Mick

Once every 2 months
I live without a car/public transport 45km from nearest city (toowoomba) and haven't seen non-rednecks for over 6 months.

No worries

This list may be of some use to you
https://www.amateurradio.com.au/links/clubs

Theres a few Amatuer Radio clubs are over on your side. They're usually fairly friendly if somewhat eccentric.

I've also been hearing rumours of a small Hackerspace type group over that way also. If I come across any details I post them.

Cheers,
Sean.

Yep. But with 4 Yorkshiremen. I'll have to check it out on Youtube.
Maybe I should start signing with YATH (yet another thread hijack)

Love it. I have got so used to going Off Topic here that recently when I was on Whirlpool, I had a post deleted for being Off Topic. I suggested to another poster he should remove the tracking suffix off a URL he posted from ZDNet.
