I saw a passing comment about how people pay now (other than cash or I suppose cheques/checks) and it made me wonder - how do you?

I'm in England and we use credit/debit cards which are "smart cards" - they have an embedded uC which is powered externally (almost always by inserting the card into a small machine but they're trying to move to NFC). We have a 4-digit PIN used for security and enter it to confirm/validate the transaction.

It's often called Chip and PIN. It's easy & quick and if you lose your card it can't be used by anyone else because they don't know the PIN. (This made me wonder why Apple Pay would be of much interest as it's kind of solving a problem that doesn't exist.)

So... people in other countries... do you use the same or if not then what?

I've heard USA doesn't use the above. Details?

You're lucky - you have more security then us.

The latest craze here in NZ is PayWave, which is where you just wave the card within an inch or so of a reader, and you don't need ANY PIN number - it is just clocked up to the card that was waved.

NO SECURITY - AT ALL.

Banks here are forcing us to use this - you CANNOT opt-out - it is on your new VISA(or whatever) card when you get issued with a new one - no option to say you DON'T want it. If you contact the bank and ask to have it disabled, they refuse.

Banks here are also holding you accountable if someone steals your card. This means that if someone DOES nick your card, they could go in and out of shops all along the road, clocking up $100 or so in each one, and YOU are still liable to pay the bill.

The only way this can be reversed, is if you ask for a reversal at the time of purchase.

There have been documented cases here, of the next person in the queue at a supermarket, being billed for the previous customer's items. When asked if that happens much, the report was: "All the time" (in that, the shop has to reverse the charges).

It's insane, and all in the name of "Convenience."Edited by Grogster 2014-09-18

Ouch! That'll play into Apple's hands, I guess.

I see NFC being eased in on the sly here, but I'm not sure where it can actually be used as yet. The logo on the cards (& aerial in them) is a scary indication of what is apparently on its way :(

@Grogster, I did read a post somewhere that described drilling or punching a hole in the card in a specific area that disconnects the antenna track and thus disables the "pay wave". Any future transactions have to be done with PIN etc.

Yes, I think it was someone here posted a photo showing where to blow the holes through the card - I think it was in the "Tap and Go" cards in the other stuff forum a year or so ago.

That will work, as you say, cos then the card can't "Talk" to the reader. However, after investigating this a little, guess what? - That is illegal - you are purposely defacing bank property. If the bank discover you have done that - like you use the drilled card at their counter or something, and they ask you about it, you will be given a big fine for "Defacement of official bank property."

If you read the fine-print on just about ANY credit-card or cash-card issued to you, it will state that the card "Remains the property of the bank at all times."
