Hi folks.

I have one of these keypads from Jaycar, but you can also find them all over eBay and the like.

My one was not supplied with any data at all, and the shop did not have anything either. What I need to know, is what connections are what internally on the matrix - hard to wire up without knowing that.

I am GUESSING that these are a standard, so can someone point me or show me which pad is which on these things?

I have had a look around, and while images of these keypads are everywhere, I have yet to find a schematic diagram.

EDIT: I have found this image for the cute membrane ones you can get on eBay:

I will ASSUME that the Jaycar one is the same - I will now use that image as the basis of some multimeter tests....

Please note that Beta's up to, and including v4.6B3 there was a bug regarding the KEYPAD command.

v4.6B3 gave erratic readings even with no key pressed. So confirming that the KEYPAD command does not work in v4.6B3

Geoff is aware and I'm sure in his usual manor that he has fixed this by now (but I haven't tested it recently!)

I have worked with many types, 3x4, 4x4, 5x5. 5x4. always Rows, then Cols, of course the multitester is your best friend, take in count that you have to test resistance instead of continuity.

There 8 connections across the bottom of the jacar 4*4 keypad, lets number
them 1 to 8, left to right looking from the front of the keypad
connections = button
1 - 5 = 1
1 - 6 = 4
1 - 7 = 7
1 - 8 = *
2 - 5 = 2
2 - 6 = 5
2 - 7 = 8
2 - 8 = 0
3 - 5 = 3
3 - 6 = 6
3 - 7 = 9
3 - 8 = #
4 - 5 = A
4 - 6 = B
4 - 7 = C
4 - 8 = D
I think this makes the first 4 connections the vertical column
and the last connections the horizontal rows

Yes, mine from Jaycar is the same as John k s above. Looking from above the keys, the header connections on the backing board are: columns (L > R) then Rows (Top > Bot). I haven't got one like Grog's photo above to check if they're the same.

Hi Grogster,

I looked at several different keypads and I have found 2 pin outs,

One is the same as shown in your diagram, The other is the first four and second four pins swappwed.

Ie

Row1 Row2 Row3 Row4 Col1 Col2 Col3 Col4 In your example

and

Col1 Col2 Col3 Col4 Row1 Row2 Row3 Row4
