Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Grogster-plexing - I like that! I've just read through that link to Wikipedia - interesting stuff. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

Certainly not my usual genuine parts supplier here in Melbourne, i.e. Element 14. They want $18 each for MAX7219CNG+ ...errk! The two I have were from e-Bay for $1 each, so more than likely are non-genuine. Having said that they're marked as the standard MAX7219CNG without the '+' on the end that all the El 14 ones have so my e-Bay ones may be an older design. The data sheet I have here doesn't have any variation marked as a '+' so maybe that the case - it's dated 2003. Greg |

It doesn't always have to be a fake when it is cheap. Sometimes it is a part salvaged from another board and cleaned up. BTW. I have new genuine MAX7219CNG+ chips for about 6USD. Shipping 2US$. No minimum order. Microblocks. Build with logic. |

there is also quite a trade in partial-reels (or partial boxes), where a product production run has excess stock left over at the end of the run. the assembly plant (contract manufacturer) is often free to dispose of the surplus parts as they so wish - the company contracting them to do the assembly has no interest in retaining spare/surplus components. also, with ICs in particular, once a sealed package has been opened the components within have a limited time frame to be used within for automated assembly. once that time has been exceeded, the components need to be baked to remove absorbed oxygen. once that time has been well exceeded, it is prudent to not use the parts. i believe that the vast majority of ICs for sale on ebay, out of china, are most likely excess stock, and perfectly genuine but 'out of date'. there will always be a few exceptions, parts in high demand where the surplus supply lines can not keep up. anecdotal evidence suggests that usb to serial bridges from prolific and FTDI fall into this category, as well as some specialist audio op-amps. rob :-) |
