Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I have come across this new chip which could be quiet useful:
http://www.analog.com/static/imported-files/data_sheets/AD55 93R.pdf

It is an eight port I/O chip with an I2C interface. What is outstanding is that any pin can be independently configured as an:
- Analog output (ie, DAC)
- Analog input (ie, ADC)
- Digital input (with optional pulldown)
- Digital output (normal or open collector)

The DAC and ADC are 12 bit and it includes a 0.5% accurate voltage reference. It makes a great general purpose I/O chip.

I have asked for some samples - now to think up an interesting application...

More than US$7each for qty 10 from Digkey. No thanks.

If speed is not an issue, better option is to configure a ucontroller as universal I/O device. Many low end ucontrollers don't have DACs.

I have successfully used a 2nd(or 3rd!) MicoMite IC on I2C to act as port expansion. My model elevator project uses three MM chips. One is a CPU(the master), one is an input controller(slave #1), and the third one is an output controller(slave #2).

A triple-core MicroMite.

There was also a MCP serial port-expansion chip that talked on I2C - I forget the part number.

Wow..!

Great find Geoff.. In one chip, you could design several different kinds of interface boards with 12bit analog and digital control... awesome I can think of a few uses right off... Will have a read of this one...

Thanks.!

12 bit DAC and ADC in one package is very useful.
