Hi I thought I would share this project we did for a local café in Christchurch. This café has a unique claim to fame in that they have a pneumatic menu ie your order is delivered via an air blown tube system. The café has retro look and feel and this was part of the brief that's why the PCBs are exposed so you can see the working bits. The bell that signals the arrival of your food is a genuine part from a Pinball Machine as are the globes that light up the tube when your order is about to leave the kitchen Take a look at the video C1 Video This has been in place for a while now and is running on the MX150. The software is setup for each station as the food travels at different rates depending on the length of the tube. The Micromite takes care of announcing the departure and arrival of the order. (Bell lights etc.) But all in all a cool use the Micromite A few pics of the setup below

Penroses store in Dunedin, New Zealand had the same kind of thing for sending money to the office on the upper floor. No cash-registers on any of the counters. You would buy your goods, hand over the money, they would put it into one of the capsules along with a purchase order, put that in the tube and pull a lever I think it was, and the tube would suck the capsule up to the office. You'd wait and chat to the person behind the counter for a minute or so, till the capsule came back with your receipt and/or change. I seem to remember there were two tubes per counter - a send and return arrangement.(one tube sucks the capsules up to the office, the other blows it back) There were no credit-cards or EFTPOS at all in those days, everything was done with cash, which is why the system worked so well. Would not be practical for transactions these days with all the plastic money. As a young boy, I remember being amazed at that system. The Otago Daily Times office still uses that system today to send ads up to the offices from reception if you walk in and place one in person, but unfortunately, the Penroses store is no longer with us. Ahhhhh, sweet memories........ Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |
