KB 3035583 was a mysterious "important update, it turns out this update is nagware to try and get punters to update to Windows 10 !!

After the FTDI automatic update fiasco, one would have thought that MSFT would have been extra careful about not abusing the automatic update mechanism - seems not !

This kind of thing just builds mistrust between MSFT and users - I can already hear @JohnS typing in "I told you so !!"

Did you get bitten by this "Update"?

As you say, after the FTDI disaster, you'd think they would know better...

I have Automatic Updates set to download only, but let me decide which to apply, that way, I can stop updates like this one running, if there is a warning about it such as there is here.

No, I have the same settings as you, and if an update looks suspicious, eg it's NOT security related, I go to MSFT's KB and check it out. This one stank as soon as I looked it up on MSFT's KB - the wording was so vague, and the wording reminded me of an update for Windows 8 which was nagware about upgrading to Windows 8.1 which crippled my uncle's machine - I had to use restore points to get rid of it.

Right click on this update and select "Hide".

With your update settings you may be better off with the following setting.

You then have choices about when to download. Some of those updates are pretty hefty these days. I have MS Orifice 13 and it regularly hits 1 GB + of updates but even without that several hundred meg per machine is possible.

Also there is no point in downloading an update if you don't want to install it.

I forgot to say that I put KB3035583 on a test machine and it installed and uninstalled without any dramas and didn't even need a reboot.
