Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Cloud (Internet Web) On-Line programming and development appears to be gaining more momentum, with an aim to make programming and development "Simpler and Easier?"

Microsoft Touch is a push from the big boys to introduce kids, newbies and they say even experts to programming and development using Simple graphical type language.

Quote  Touch Develop runs in Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Windows Phone, Mac OS, Linux, iPad, iPhone, Chromebook or Android. No installation required, it just works.

Supports Arduinos, BBC micro-bits and no doubt others will jump on the band wagon.

I will give them credit for graphical/visual approach, as this is something kids will relate to immediately and become excited. On top of that kids are already on line with all kinds of other activities, so are totally familiar with on-line environment.

There are other more "professional" cloud based microcontroller developments, "mbed" is promoted by ARM. There is new semi cloud Python for micontrollers "Viper".

One step forwards, eight hundred steps back.

It's great that they've made code that can be edited both as blocks and text. Except wait, it can't. Even in advanced coder mode there are little helpers. So small they take a third of the screen. And the programming area can be reduced to the left third of the screen too.

Fortunately Chrome has zoom options. Oh how clever, whichever idiot designed the user interface makes the huge font adjust itself to remain huge. Obviously the font has to be huge so that people on tablets and phones can use it, right? Yes Bill!

A bloody ZX-81 has three times as many lines showing when you start typing, and each of them is as long as the massive 30-odd characters remaining visible.

And all I typed was an r.

From the people that brought you visual basic DOT NOT.

PS. While I am on a rant, why does this website not allow png images to be uploaded? I haven't used the gif format for anything but animation since before Y2K.

If it weren't for seeing 'main()' I would have thought that this was an image of some sort of social media.

No Thanks.
