Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Check out https://www.microchip.com/mplab/mplab-xpress

This will change some things.

Now for 8-bit, 16 and 32 bits are planned.

I just imported a few projects and they compiled with just some slight modifications to the file paths. Great, no more MPLab install necessary so i can use it on multiple computers.

I think much more code will be available as it is very easy to create/open example (sharing) projects.
Also much easier for people to start with programming PIC's as nothing needs to be installed to get started.
After using it for a few hours, i like it.

Nothing really changes and the compiler is still crippled.

In fact if anything it will do more harm than good as more people, especially students/hobbyists will jump on the chance at a cheep board and no need to install the IDE to try out PIC16.

What they will find is code that is so inefficient that it will make everyone else chips programed with free optimized compiles appear to be much faster and more powerful than the PIC16.

With no real investment in time or money lost those same new users will just walk away and buy the TI or Freescale development boards or stay with Arduino.

As for cloud based, no thanks, My code stays on my drives not theirs and, unless there is some kind of submission process, a library of badly written amature LED flashing routines is not a big draw card either.

I do like the Board though, here is the schematic if anyone else is interested.
