I am building this unit featured in Silicon Chip February 2016, using the SC kit. The two 100 nf ceramics are OK, but the two 10 mfd (at the regulator)and one 47 mfd (on pin 20) capacitors are shown with polarity on the PCB, but on the tiny SMD capacitors supplied, no polarity marks appear to be visible.

Hi Herry,
The caps should have a stripe across one end, sometimes it is hard to
see, the stripe end is +

Thanks for the reply, but there is quite definitely no stripe. On the other hand the text mentions that multilayer ceramics may be supplied if SMDs and of course these are not polarised. Further thoughts from anyone??

Hi Herry,

maybe (!) this are ceramics and you don't need to care about polarity.
I'm confident of that! Just try!

Hi Herry,

I would assume (I know I shouldnt do that) that these are most likely ceramic which do not need to be polarised..

Generally Polarised Caps are Tantalum and these are mostly YELLOW or BLACK in colour but the case is always some sort of plastic. If they are Ceramics these are generally a Brown to greyish colour and not plastic but the ceramic itself.

If unsure try to post a clear picture up on TBS and we will check for you.

Kind Regards,

Mick

Note from Silicon Chip article.

Quote  Note that the 10uF and 47uF capacitors are polarised. (the longer lead is the positive)

Thanks all. I thought I had set the notifications to 'email me' but apparently not. Have just seen these. Unit working AOK.
