Are there many maximites in use ? According to Silicon Chip there were "thousands sold" but I have not seen any posts specifically using it, I am wondering if effort for 64-pin '795 is worthwhile or would be better spent on the 100-pin format |

I am referring to the original b+w maximite, not including the generic label, not the colour maximite, and so on and on |

maximite? Since I have some 28 pin chips with MMBasic, what do I have. When I look at what some of the vendors supply, in finished products, I am not sure what it is that you would be getting, name wise that is. It is already getting confusing as to what chip you need to run the latest MMBasic. |

I still have my original Dontronics B/W Maximite, and a coupld of CircuitGizmos colour Maximite boards. The Dontronics B/W one was my first Maximite, bought entirely cos of the SC article(s) that ran at the time - what issue was that now? That led on to the colour Maximite, as you know, and that led on to the Micromite, which has really taken off on these forums at any rate. I would still use a B/W or colour Maximite if I needed something with a basic VGA output, but for anything other then B/W or 8-colour, I go right to the TFT screens you can connect to the MM+ series of chips. SC's mention of 'Thousands sold' will be a global figure, and possibly inflated, although, I don't see any reason why that can't be true - it was very popular at the time. The point being that out of the thousands sold(SC's words), not all of those users will be forum members here if you see what I mean. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

About 4 years ago I bought a Maximite from Altronics to prototype a target timer for the local shooting club. Then bought 2 miniMaximites from Jaycar and 2 CGMMSTICK1 from Circuit Gizmos (USA)to put on the range. These hook up to a VGA display and 4 button remote to operate a relay controlling an air solenoid. No troubles with these after 2 years in operation. Bought 5 microMite chips to do something similar using 8x8 LED matrix displays but they were very unstable. Something caused the program to be over written or erased so I gave up on that project. I did buy one of the small touch screen LCD's a while back so I'll get a PCB for the Backpack and have a play with that. Some of the latest ideas for these are really amazing. Recently I bought another miniMaximite kit from Jaycar to make a similar timer for another club. |

were these micromites MX150 or MX170 chips? the MX150 was the original micromite, while the MX170 is used for the current micromite 2. there existed a bug in the MX170 firmware that could cause basic code to be lost or corrupted if power was interrupted during startup. as i recall, this was often triggered by the use of the OPTION command near the start of your code. that bug has been fixed in recent firmware versions. version 5.1 is the most recent. it is quite easy to update the firmware in a micromite using just a few dollars worth of parts and a small command-line application called pic32prog. cheers, rob :-) |
