Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I have heard that in 2020, the US is pretty definite that the free
GPS use will change and be split into separate civil and military modes.
Fair enough - it is a pretty generous system really - but I am guessing,
civil access will then require changed/new GPS modules ? any info ?Edited by chronic 2016-05-26

I have not heard of that one and would be interested if someone has some more info.

But, you can now get modules that will use either the US system or the Russian one so that will make us less reliant on the US system. For example, this module is cheap (US$8.59) and works with both systems.

It will be a problem if ever both go to war as both would switch their system to military use only.

After looking into a bit more, my understanding now is that
(for civilian/commercial access) :

There was originally a low-accuracy setup available on "L1" frequency.
Then some time afterwards more accurate (~3.5 m) access was allowed
on "L2" frequency, at least until two years after a new set of satellites was in place, which set a sunset clause of 2020.

A more recent update on that, is that now a newer very precise "L5" based set is being built up, and the old L2 access will be provided until two years after that is all in place - currently that provisionally extends it to 2024. The dates are subject to change via defence requirements of course.

So the cheapie GPS modules have a reasonable span yet, but not perpetual.

And Japan, India, China are also setting up their own systems - space must
be getting crowded !
