Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

To Grog & the other K1W1's,

Just fished out Feb 2013's SC magazine to have a look at the Seismograph they published back then.

Curious about how it could be implemented with a Micromite.

The hardware is simple, just a case of whether there's a better alternative for the sensing side of things.

Would be something I'd like to have, if I lived over there, considering the last few weeks.

Phil.

I'll have that issue somewhere - I will have a dig and a read.

Yeah, pretty nasty damage near the epicentre - not good.

Yes,

The mechanical bits look easy.

Just wonder what sensor alternatives there might be.

Accelerometer module on the moving arm?
Not sure how sensitive that would be.

3-axes-Analog-Output-Accelerometer-Module

Or maybe an magnet at the end and a Hall effect sensor.

Be nice if the circuitry was the easiest bit just leaving the mechanics of the thing & the code.

No earthquakes in Australia much though, is there?

Actually 1 or 2 minor tremors in my local are in the past 15-20 years.
The August 2015 one is one that we felt here.

But, yeah we have history of a few.

Australia's Earthquakes.

Certainly think the right thing hiding away would help you guys.

Food for thought regarding an easily built sensor...

Pretty self explanatory.

Still got this idea ticking away in the back of my mind.

Any thoughts on adding a sensor to this?

use a phone , read the gyro , send it to a database if the gyro changing the data , so you can create a really big network .

The circuit in the original SC article is simple enough. Just replace the PICAXE with a 'mite of choice and a display.
The signals of interest are low frequency so the mite's analogue inputs will be plenty fast enough.

The 3 axis accelerometer should also work but I am not sure about their low frequency abilities.
It would be interesting to compare the sensitivity of the two methods.

It is something I nearly built when the article came out and next time the earth moves, I will wish I had.

I should have added that it is the movement of the earth we are looking at, not the pendulum so the 3 axis accelerometer is simply glued to a convenient lump of concrete.

That makes the hardware side of things easy!
