Still don't have any power monitoring going on my heat pump conversion. Just stumbled across these, Energy Monitor Module with Serial TTL. Looks like it does away with the need for calculations from the other type sensors, with Voltage, Current, Power & Energy usage all sent out in the serial data string. Haven't found a data sheet yet, but there's some relevant info on Github. Looks like it could be a really useful module for anyone wanting power monitoring without the alternate hardware & code overhead. Cheers Phil. |

It's good to have the data sheet. The module could be handy. I normally don't trust ebay quality mains connected devices but it looks like the serial is opto-isolated so that makes me a bit more willing to try it. Got a couple of plug in cheapies here with large displays, $20.00 at the junk shop. Pulled them apart yesterday to resolve the "Rain" issue. It was interesting to see the screen/keypad connections with their SPI markings. Saw this page earlier in the day, Reverse engineered power meter. And this. Don't understand SPI enough to make use of the information, but could it be a useful option to break out of a complete monitor unit. Phil. |

The Asian's have a sense of humour when it comes to novel things to connect to the mains supply. Especially when it comes to 'creepage' clearances. Looking at that X2 capacitor I can just picture the power supply schematic in my head. Capacitive reactance is not my idea of isolation. Reminds me of the poor girl that bought an iPhone charger, off eBay, and got her head fried while listening to music through headphones. No mention of 'power factor' measurement in the specs so I guess it can only represent apparent power. Pass..................... @Phil, 'Hot Snot' has many uses. At least they bothered. I have a monitoring system for total mains power drain/feed based on a maximite. The voltage is monitored via a small mains transformer. The current is measured using a hall sensor in a gapped core around the main conductor. The instantaneous voltage is measured then the current is measured 20ms later, which relies on the voltage not changing much from cycle to cycle. The two values are multiplied to get the instantaneous power. The power is measured at 20 points in the cycle and then averaged. You can use these samples to measure power factor and real and reactive power. The power can be negative or positive depending on solar grid feed and local consumption. |
