Need to buy some solder so I can try my hand at SMD. I recall in a previous thread (which I can't seem to find now) that 0.5mm solder is considered a could general purpose solder for SMD parts. Whilst searching on Elemenet14 I came across 2 Multicore options. They appear to be very similar but the there is a substantial difference in price. Does anyone know why and whether one is better than the other?

The multicore part number is the same so looks like two listings for the same item - go with the cheaper

Rockby in Melbourne have a current special for 250g of 0.7mm 60/40 resin core as well - for $14. It's from Consolidated Alloys who are a reputable manufacturer. Rockby Stock No. is 12677.

One word of warning: DON'T buy the cheap solder wire on eBay or Aliexpress etc. This stuff is absolute rubbish. You are fine with the element-14 stuff though, or any other reputable supplier.

Got enough of that crap stuff to last a lifetime (don't need much as the consumption rate is pretty low unless I am going fishing). Don't need any more...

Use Rockby a bit so I will check their solder out - always looking for a reason to drop in (although parking around there is a pain). They do have 0.5mm (Stock No: 34114) but it isn't on sale (although the "normal" price is pretty good). Thanks.
