I am surprised to see more wind mills going up in this area. These VAWT are loacted in Franklin Park Illinois in a industrial district. Doors were locks on the building so I was unable to get any info.

Must have been a real bugger to roll roofing iron like that

Thanks for those Jimbo, I though most of these designs were elaborate prototypes but obviously people have bought them.

Looks like claims of 10KW but an actual of 1kw
I'm guessing 15' high and 6' diameter probably would work!

One of those twisty things that makes you go cross eyed.

Locks on the doors because the turbines sent them broke?
Seems odd they didnt use nylock nuts.....
Luck favours the well prepared

My son moved back to Illinois a few weeks ago. I had moved from there back in 97 and he had been with me here in Alabama. He gets back up there and starts telling me about all the huge wind mills along interstate 39. I always knew there were plenty of windy folks up there but I never dreamed anyone would try to put it to use this way.

Illinois has alot of wind. There are many wind farms going up. Renewable Portfolio Standards mandated by the State is the main reason. We (Chicago)also have the worlds largest(urban)PV farm which is still under construction.

Yeah Jim, I know about the wind in Illinois. I lived in a small town about 90 miles southwest of Chicago for over 30 years. I know in the spring we could really get some high winds. I don't know how many times while riding my motorcycle in the spring we would be leaning as much as 45% to the side fighting that wind.
But if my memory serves me right most of the wind was during the winter and spring. I don't remember getting that much in the summer and fall.
I am glad to hear this is coming but really don't like that the state has mandated it. Keep the darn government out of it.
My first set of blades and so far my only ones, I made while living there. All they were was a couple of slabs of 1x6 that I cut in the shape of a blade. Made a center hub out of some aluminum tubing and set it up so I could rotate the blades to get different angles of attack. Then mounted them on my clothes line pole and watched them spin. That was before the internet and all the information out there about wind power.

PS. Where is the PV farm going up??Edited by Sonny 2010-02-16
