Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

It has come to my attention that you can buy a 2KW+ chinese turbine of various brands from $1500-$3000.
Question is realistically can we beat even $3000 for a mill good for 2.5KW in 10m/s good for a max output of 3.6KW
for that money?
I'm thinking its very tough to beat when the neo's alone are $700 or so, even if labour is free, all the bits and pieces add up quickly.Luck favours the well prepared

I would think the neos would be under half that Karl.
Its a matter of if you like the fun of building something and watching it all work out and being able to say ...i done that.
I do agree it is tempting to work out of the box but you dont learn much that way and this great forum would not have got off the ground if everyone went that way.

I think it is increasingly hard to meet that price point. The Chinese are getting better and better at WTG design due to their heavy government funding in this area plus their labor is 1/4 what I spent in beer making mine.

best i've found for 2" x 1/2" round neos is $30 each
x 24 = $720.....
starting to look like obviously they can buy bits cheaper than us to the point where its getting very tough to beat.
and as you point out beer is also expensive, i reckon i've spent $1000's on that alone!Luck favours the well prepared

Well lets see if 168 off 16x13mm N50 round neo's can do that quote that the thread is based on. Those mags will be placed to emulate a 48x13mm round neo. Using 2 in hand 1.6mm wire should get the stator down to under 0.5ohm and on a 24 volt array using a self made 4 metre diameter prop those figures will be realistic.
True the price and quality of those Exmork Wind Gennies are hard to beat the DIY aspect is taken away. Those 16mm neo's only cost around $250 landed and as I can make the rest on the cheap I will document the costing on my turbine and see if I can make the above claim....

I think Phill ran into this demon too.
When I got a quote for his turbine, he hadnt really priced all the bits to the nth degree, when he did he realised he had pretty much done lots of work for very little.
That said -making something from nothing and then having something good enough to sell is a Fantastic achievement way beyond concocting something no-one is prepared to buy.
I have my fingers crossed that Phill will sell me the AX300 when the 400 is finished as he only has two towers
If you're reading this Phill I want first dibs on the AX300!Luck favours the well prepared
