Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Here is a snippet from an article that came up on the GooGle bar.

"Siemens now has a 49-meter blade along with its 45-meter blade. The longer blade weighs a half a ton less than the 45-meter blade."

There was a picture of 3 men standing in the attachment area of the blade. Puts what we "DIY" builders do, in a bit of perspective.

Gordon.

That Siemens blade is a monster. It must be for its offshore models as it is pretty much now too large to effectively transport across land. Siemens has some really good tech.
I always thought that small turbines would grow to emulate their big brothers but I am seeing more of things going the other direction. Make way for the new generation of direct drive PM air core large turbines. You haven't lived until you've seen a 22 ft dia stator.

Here's a pic of me doing some pitch work, standing in the hub of a 'measly' 1.5 MW turbine.

Perry,

Thats not a hub, its more like a house.
You could house a small village in that.

Its funny how a little elevation changes to propective to the eye at ground level.

''The clipper wind mill that the bases are machined in the shop where Jr. and I have worked is set up at 400 feet in the air!
They have machined some hubs for Gamesa and Vestas that also a man can stand in. The Clipper raw base had a shipping weight on 39,000 lbs !
Yep there is some big stuff out there.''
