a wealth of info is available on Axial Flux alternators and windmills on the net, and there are some how to build guides available as well.

As for a comparison, there really is no comparison. Most treadmill motors are good on a treadmill.

An Axial Flux alternator, is a good learning project, in that you can make a relatively simple bench test unit, and design an alternator to suit your magnets and wind coils to suit the system voltage and the amount of power the blades can produce.

If you have nothing at the moment, then you should consider getting a how to booklet.

Gary axial flux generators are good as you get to deign one for your requirements, and since you build it you can repair it,I fly one. I also have a conversion, and have tried PM motors.

Hugh's book is good although i find his latest a bit confusing because of the inclusion of various size units in the same text. Also the book by the Dan's from Otherpower is good complementary book and their forum is full of what you are looking for.

There are many traps for young players(and old) so start with a tried and proven design, then roll your own if you wish.

Gary,

I have kept a very detailed photo diary that you can access. It describes my entire journey by first building an F&P turbine, and then an axial flux. You can click through each page, or use the index.

It covers anchors, tower, shunt controllers, turbines, blade carving and more.
