It is a shame when a relic stops working. :)

It is the right colour to attract someones attention. Not sure it is worth fixing, so how much does it weigh [boat anchor], or maybe a static display in a museum may be the go.

The right person with the right equipment could always repair this type of machine, but there are plenty of replacement options that would be more viable.

Shipping weight will probably be a problem. Hard to put a real $ value in it.

Gordon.

Wooooo what a bummer. We just seen your posting on U Tube.
May be you should open the gear box and check it out first?

you'd be really surprised how cheap it is to get gears made
check out the "yellow pages" equivalent in the USA.
send them the old broken gear and get a new one cut, i'd be surprised if a new gear out of EN36 would be more than $100.

I used to get straight cut gears made by Modena engineering in Melbourne F1 tooth profiles, etc etc.
simple gears are cheap, but long shafts with multiple gears can get very expensive.

I paid about $6K for a straight cut dog box for a WRX and others were on the market for $4K, not exactly mass produced either!

If it has a sort of pinion shaft forget it as they require some complex machines to manufacture and would be hideously expensive as a one off.

Hi DTV004

You may be able to replace the gears with a Gates tooth belt, if there is enough room in the gearbox and the generator will work in reverse they are off the shelf items and don't cost a fortune. Just machine the shafts to suit the sprockets. A 1.5 inch wide belt is good for 60 hp and 10,000 hours service life.

All the best

I have a guy right down the road from me who might be able to cut the new gears for you. That's all he did for a long time but still has all the equipment.

edit to add, wish I could get it from you because if he can't cut the gears I sure can. Just take me allot longer.Edited by Sonny 2010-04-17
