That's a real quality build there Adam!
Your first one, it looks like you have
done your homework and are taking everyone's
advice on what works.

So just to mention about those fine blades
you have made, do you have a little bit of
a angle welded into the motor mount to tilt
the blades away from the tower? I wasn't
able to tell from the pictures.

It looks like they will be close. I think you need
about a foot from the blades to the tower for them
to flex. They move quite a bit. I'm not criticizing
at all just hope you don't have a tower strike, your
blades are beautiful.

Since the motors I have been able to get all have 1 3/8"
shafts I put a trailer spindle on with a shaft coupler
to get the prop out there another 8" or so. But it looks
like the motor you have has a tapered shaft, not sure.

Being forward also helps with furling. Don't mean any harm,
your work looks awesome. I'm a wood worker and craftsman
also. Paint her up and be proud of the power you will be
producing. If you can get her up out of turbulence and
into clean wind it will sure help not to stress the rotor
as much.

Thanks for sharing.

mike-
thanks for all of the compliments! i'd like to think i'm doing an okay job.

i've got about a four degree tilt within the weldment to distance the blades from the tower stub. and yes, it is a taper shaft. i had a friend mill me a part to fit the shaft, and this part bolts to two 12" stainless plates that sandwich the blade roots. so, when you look at the photos the backside of the blades will be flush with the nut on the shaft. i think i've got enough clearance to prevent tower strikes, but can't remember the distance last time i test fitted the blades to the shaft adapter.

as for the tower and avoiding turbulent wind... this is gonna be tricky. i found the home for it and it is in the middle of a meadow that is prolly 400' x 400', but the edges are full of 50' pine trees. i've been planning a 60' tower and know i should go higher, but it seems the costs rise steeply once you break the 60 foot barrier. the power this turbine produces is only for my ranch, and i'm only there every so often, so even if it is not a top performer due to lack of tower height, i think i'll be okay with that.

nice score on the $30.00 motor! i had to pay 160.00 for mine (including shipping 70.00).

would it be "ungreen" to top a few trees (not cut down) to increase wind turbine performance?

Just tell the greenie's you trimmed the trees 15' to encourage more lower growth besides you will need future firewood.....

Hi Birdhouse

Pruning trees is good for the environment as it makes the trees bush out and grow more branches for the birds to build nests in, as they grow, they absorb more pollution from the coal fired power stations and it provides wood for your heating instead of burning heating oil or coal for electric heating and the out put from the wind generator can further reduce pollution maybe you could install a bigger generator to feed the grid and further reduce the enviromental damage caused by coal and volcanoes erupting.
The tops can be turned into mulch to increase the fertility of the soil or act as a playground soft soil to prevent the little children hurting themselves on the coal ash playground.

The hard part is to get the politicians and bureaucrats to stand under the trees you are trimming and catch the tops as they fall to avoid damaging the environment soil microbes or endangered frogs, GO FOR IT.

All the best

it's funny how "being green" is a giant slide rule. ie: paper plates are made from trees, yet regular plates need washing and use soap and water, which is the more precious resource? or which is greener?

i've got a few thousand pine trees in the 20-60' range, so topping a few wouldn't bother me none. was just curious of all your takes on it.

thinking i'm gonna pick up TOWER PIPE! tomorrow after work!

That would need to be a new thread I think. Its a good point to discuss but not on this thread.

Glenn

I'l start a new thread on that now in the My 2 Cents area, give me 10 minutes.Edited by Gizmo 2010-04-27
The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now.

In case anyone was wondering these motors
have 3 wires coming out(or 4, one is just a ground).

It produces ac power as soon as the shaft starts turning,
so all that is needed is a bridge rectifier to convert the
ac to dc. Three wires means at least 2 or a 3 phase bridge
or stud diodes to make a 3 phase bridge rectifier.

So it is producing power as soon as the shaft starts to turn
and once it gets to above battery voltage the amps start to flow
into the battery.

The beauty of these motors are they are sealed from the elements
and should last for a long time, nothing to wear out but the
front and rear bearings. And they are very big and quality bearings,
so many years of service. The rest is up to you to make a reliable
machine, the hard part is done for you.

I guess www.anotherpower.com doesn't work anymore.

Sorry for the link. I had a gallery there with photos
of my tower construction and some mills.

I keep an eye on ebay all the time. I've noticed on the australian ebay you don't see many cheap/2nd hand servos, mostly only new with the price tag to match. I notice on the american ebay theres plenty to choose from, just that postage to australia is always a killer due to the weight of them. They definately look like they are built to last.
