Hi Everyone

I just tossed up another short video on youtube called "Adventures In Blade Stall". This is basically for newbies; nothing earth-shattering for the regular crew here.

This time it's my same backyard (toy) windmill, which has had its blades twisted to 45-degrees in an effort to induce blade stall and prevent over-speeding and lessen the possibility of it throwing a blade either over the fence into dogsville or through my rear neighbor's plate glass window.

These are the 16-inch hollow Coroflute blades, which are open on their ends. The tips were left open in an effort to spoil the tip noise as the thing whirls through the air and I'm happy to say that this was a success. My larger blades (for the axfx) will use open tips as well.

Since I've set all three blades to a "stall" position of 45-degrees, the open tips won't make much difference. Still, I want to leave this windmill up for a while and the idea of shagging a blade lost from over-speeding led me to reduce its spinning ability.

Hi Mac,

I think you have got the concepts of stall (and feathering) backwards.. In stall the blades spin too slow compared to the windspeed, and the laminar airflow breaks away from the blade. This then causes the loss of lift, also know as stall.

If you turn the blades into steeper angle, instead of stalling the blades are feathered. They will spin slower, but the air still flows around the profile like it's supposed to do.
If at first you don't succeed, try again.

You're likely correct. I'm a plumber; 'nuf said there.

All I know is when I'm flying my R/C gliders, if I yank the stick aft too hard, the nose pops up and the plane stalls (stops mid-air and surely has thoughts of auguring in!). Flying is where I got my terminology and you're likely right. Thanks for the correction.

I don't have a clue how to "edit" a youtube video (or any other type for that matter) so we'll just let the rest of the world think I'm an idiot. Perhaps they're right!

AS for being a idiot on Youtube, i doubt you will even be noticed amount the idiots trying to pass burning Browns gas off as plasma arc and other whacky crap.

I think the mill looks goofy with that much set on the blades.

Looks more like a giant paint stirer.

I was disapointed there was no cheap fire crackers....you will have to lift your Youtube game.

Since I don't know how to "edit" a video, I'll likely broom it and shoot another one. Maybe I'll change the pitch to 40 degrees so it resembles a windmill more than a paint stirrer and maybe I'll add some sparklers just for you!

I don't want the thing to go fast for the reasons given in the video, but I have had a little windmill twirling in my yard ever since I was about 21 years old and in the Coast Guard, so it stays.

Off subject, but on topic: I sent oz an email with another one of my hair-brained ideas, so if you see smoke rising from the south, you'll know he got it! He gets a little worked up with all my goofy things. I think the fact that I just plain don't understand all I know about stuff is the worst. Sorry, oz.

Oh i do like sparklers

What are you telling me ....the old saying of "wheres there is smoke there is fire" is no longer true and we need to rephase it with "where there is smoke there is Oz"

He proberly gets a cold chill down his back everytime an email from Mac pops up.

IT'S A GONNER!

Boy, uploading a video to youtube takes forever. Deleting one takes about half a nano-second! All you do is click on a little "x" and it's history!

I'll to another one as soon as I both gain some understanding about "stall" and find some sparklers for Bob.

Okay, well crap! I thought it was a gonner. Turns out it's still there. Anyone know how to delete a video from youtube? I Googled it and one post said, "Just go to "My Videos" and delete it."

Now, if I could only find that "My Videos" section, I'd be cookin' with gas, right?

Edit: Oh, almost forgot: I tossed up a "replacement" video with way less misinformation (I think) as well as a cameo of yours truly, that fellow with the big, round head!

I actually figured it all out!

I'm talking about my youtube account; sorry Oz, you're not off the hook yet. Anyways, deleting a misinformation video I tossed up on youtube turned into its own little nightmare. It took me a week to find the "My Videos" file, which is located in the drop-down menu created by clicking on the little down arrow by the account user's name in the UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER ---- contrary to what Google tells you. Google's online help says it's in the upper left hand corner. Maybe they're viewing the world from behind the looking glass, eh?

At any rate, I've deleted the "Adventures In Blade Stall" video as apparently I didn't understand all I know (Oz sighs) about what I stated in the video.

Sorry for the bogus video; I'll try to be more accurate. I'm also sorry to make Oz jump through so many hoops for my lack of understanding about something else. Maybe I'll just go back to air-pumping windmills or maybe I'll wind a copper coil 40 feet long and use a windmill to hoist a big magnet to the top, where it will fall through things by gravity and make a little electricity!
