Hi still cannot get my head round this one been looking for an age can you help.
At the moment running a small mill to chard batteries still waiting on a mate to build my charge controller so manually monitoring the bats.
What i don’t know and concerns me is the mill can get up to 30-35 v with no lode.
Do i need to regulate the power going into the batteries seen a few things saying the battery will clamp the power is this correct or will it blow the batteries up.
Do i need to regulate the power going in if so how.

The voltage you are getting will be OK for 24 volt system as the batteries will load the voltage down, it is the amps at that charge voltage that could do the damage, generally if the charge amps goes over five percent of the battery total amp hour at full charge it can cause problems. eg: 5 amps on a 100 amp hour battery bank.
The simple way is to make a dump load controller as Glenn has designed. It is in the electronic section from the front page, it is so simple even I can make it.

Hi
Working on a 12 v setup very concernd im going to put to higher voltage into the batteries im thinking if I use the bits out of an alternator may regulate it down until I get my charge controller built Reddbull alan

the bits out of the alt; voltage regulator, don't work the right way.
the alt parts monitor the batt voltage allright, but what they do is put current into the exciter coil of the alt; depending on the voltage monitored, and turn the rotor magnet to various strengths so the alt output goes up and down.
You could use the regulator to turn a switch on and off useing a relay to turn the system to dump or charge circuit but I think a physical switch like this will chatter and arc, maybe a cap across the coil leads will help
