I'm building my first windmill bases on instructions from this site regarding the F&P smart drive. I managed to get hold of an 80 series motor and also one of the new models with the lower coil and magnet count. I have placed the new magnet assembly onto the old stator and found that this does indeed de-cog it, very nice one problem solved. Now my question is, I have left over a new stator and old magnet rotor. If I place these 2 together there also appears to be no cogging. So is it possible to do this and how would I wire this combination?
It's probably not too hard to work out actually. I just need to line 1 magnet up with a coil and then find the next coil that is lined up. If that is 5 coils away then it will be a 5 phase. If that number doesn't divide into the number of coils then there could be problems. Otherwise it should work just fine.

Got it I think. It would need to be a 9 phase. You just take the number of magnets over the number of coils, expressed as a fraction, and then reduce that fraction down to the lowest whole numbers. Primary school maths basically.
Eg for the standard motor of 56 magnets and 42 coils
56/42
=28/21
=4/3
so it is 3 phase
For putting the new magnets on an old stator
48/42
=24/21
=8/7
So it needs to be converted to 7 phase.
For putting old magnets on a new stator
56/36
=28/18
=14/9
So it needs to be 9 phase
That would be ok. I can organise to get them sent to you. We took one PCB out just to scrap it I think but it's likely nothing has happened with it yet. The other one is probably still in the left over bits.
