Anyone have any pics or stories of catastrophic blade failure (home grown wind only not news stories of commercial towers). We had a serious snow storm last night with outrageous wind. I could hear my turbines in the house just whistling like crazy. Kind of scary sounding. ![]() I had to take a good look at them this morning to make sure they were still there and not stuck in a tree somewhere. I is a injenear |

Hello cobo351 I made my blades from aluminum tubing. see below. Im sure there are more efficiant designs but I am very happy with the performance of these. kinda shot from the hip regarding size and pitch but the turbines spin up real easy and crank like no tomorow in good wind even with the 3 phases shorted out at 28 amps. Dupa, the trouble I having is finding tubing metal or plastic in 12" size. I'm building a wind turbine right next to you. |

Here's where I found my chunk of tubing . )Gand Rapids Scrap yardSometimes they have somthing sometime they dont. Just need to call in often and check. Dont be too specific regarding dia. If you asked for a specific size they may say they dont have it however they may have somthing thats within a 1/2 inch and still usable. I did have a piece quoted by EMJ Metals For about $200 for a 4ft section. (you can get 6 blades from 1pc I is a injenear |

Hi Dupa, ""I could hear my turbines in the house just whistling like crazy. Kind of scary sounding."" the noise that you mention these blades make would have my neighbours going straight to the council with a complaint if they were on my mill. Most complaints with windmills are related to noise, and as long as blades are made this way, windmills will continue to get a bad report. Might be a good persuing quieter blades as well.
